Bolton   0 - 1   Sunderland

Darren Bent watches as his header eludes Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen
Bent opened his Sunderland account after only five minutes

Sunderland began new manager Steve Bruce's reign in style as Darren Bent gave them victory at Bolton on the first day of the Premier League season.

Record signing Bent outjumped Kevin Davies at the far post to give the visitors a fifth-minute lead.

And he could have had a first-half hat-trick as Sunderland dominated the game.

Bolton improved after the break and should have secured a point, but Sean Davis's close-range injury-time shot was superbly saved by Marton Fulop.

Last season Sunderland finished only two places above the drop zone and when Ricky Sbragia resigned as manager the Black Cats turned to the Premier League experience of Bruce.

The former Wigan boss shelled out just under £25m in total on new players during the close season, including a club-record £10m on Tottenham striker Bent, and the centre forward wasted little time in starting to repay Bruce's investment.

Bolton had come bustling out of the blocks in typical style but Sunderland quickly seized control and scored what turned out to be the winner.

It was created when Steed Malbranque whipped over a cross to the far post and Bent got above his marker to head across goal and past Jussi Jaaskelainen at the far post.

Modest Bent delighted by debut goal

Bolton, who finished only three places above Sunderland last term, pressed but it was to little effect and the Black Cats went close to doubling their lead.

Kieran Richardson could not convert a one-on-one with Jaaskelainen, and Bent then shot wide on the turn.

The debutant went close again midway through the half, with Jaaskelainen saving the former Spurs forward's shot at full stretch.

Kenwyne Jones, Sunderland's top scorer with 12 goals last season, twice headed wide as the game approached the half-hour mark and Bent lofted the ball wide just before the break.

Bruce - Signing Bent paid off

Sunderland's inability to take more than one of their chances meant they were far from home and dry and Bolton came desperately close to going in level at the break, but Fulop produced a stunning reaction save to keep out Gary Cahill's close-range header.

Manager Gary Megson must have had a few choice words at half-time because Bolton showed much more fight in the second half.

Matthew Taylor toe-poked wide and Johan Elmander fired over as the hosts came out strongly, before Cahill took a fierce Jones volley full in the face when Sunderland went back on the attack.

Just after the hour mark Fulop had to claw a looping Davies header off the line to maintain Sunderland's 1-0 lead and Elmander soon flashed a fierce shot across the face of the visitors' goal.

Megson - We've got to be positive

The Black Cats nearly doubled their lead shortly before the final whistle but Bent saw his shot deflected on to the top of the net, and it was the hosts who had the final chance.

The ball fell to Davis in the box but his sweetly struck effort cannoned off Fulop's legs to ensure Bruce, a lifelong fan of Sunderland's bitter rivals Newcastle, started his career as manager of what is now the north-east's only Premier League side with a well-deserved victory.

Bolton boss Gary Megson:
"I'm hugely disappointed in terms of the result and also the first half - we weren't anywhere near like we needed to be.

"We gradually came into it. Sunderland were the better side in the first 45 minutes but it completely altered in the second half - we were on top.

"We spoke about wide free-kicks on Wednesday. We faced 74 last season and didn't concede one goal from one. It was a fantastic header from Bent but our defending was not good enough.

"If we'd played in the first half like we played in the second we'd certainly have had a better result."

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce:
"I can't remember coming away from home and having so many chances like we did in the first half. If I could fault anything it would be not making the game safe.

"In the end the keeper had to produce a fantastic save - I think it would have been unjust mind you [if they had secured a draw].

"I thought we were outstanding in the first half, in the second half we had to dig deep a bit.

"Bent's young. He's the right age and it's a great start for him. All the weeks of negotiation and hard work paid off, but overall I thought the team was very good. I'm very, very pleased."

Sunderland scorer Darren Bent:
"I'm delighted to get a goal on my debut but it was more important that the team won.

"Lots of people were talking about the move and I just wanted to get off to the best possible start - it lifted a weight of my shoulders."
