Brown boosted after Hull victory

Hull boss Phil Brown celebrates Manucho's last-gasp winner at Fulham
Brown celebrates Manucho's last-gasp winner at Fulham

Hull boss Phil Brown believes the last-gasp win at Fulham will give his side a vital lift in confidence as they battle to avoid relegation.

Manucho struck the winner to move Hull up to 12th and five points above the drop zone.

"This was about a confidence-boosting result," said Brown. "It wasn't a great performance but we have played better in the last 18 games and got nothing.

"This was about a grind and we ground out a tremendous 1-0 win."

Hull put in a resilient performance against a Fulham side which failed to take their chances and Brown says the victory had put the 10th-placed Cottagers back in the survival fight.

"We've taken six points off Fulham who are now dragged back into it," said the Tigers boss.

"They have got 34 points to our 32 so it shows you how many teams are in this relegation battle."

He added: "We asked the players to renew their vows as it were. Renew their faith in the system and campaign."

Substitute striker Manucho is on loan from Manchester United and Brown hopes he will help Hull steer clear of relegation.

"There's more to come from Manucho," said Brown. "He wasn't getting games at Old Trafford so Sir Alex (Ferguson) wanted to loan him out to find his feet at this level if possible.

"We've been impressed with his attitude in training and at not being selected, which is key if you are a substitute and you do come on.

"His mentality was right at Fulham. Their defender Brede Hangeland is a handful but when Manucho came on it was a different ball game."

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson believes his side were hard done by in losing a game they had dominated.

"I wouldn't have felt too bad at 0-0," he said. "At 0-0 we were the closest to winning and to lose it to a rare attack by Hull is hard to take.

"I thought we should have scored on a couple of occasions. We missed our chances which we can't blame anyone for apart from ourselves."

He added: "We want points so we can stop looking over our shoulder."
