Adams will be a success - Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Tony Adams has the necessary attributes to succeed as Portsmouth boss, despite the club's recent run of poor form.

Adams, whose side have taken just one point from their last four games, goes head-to-head with his former manager at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

But Wenger has confidence that Adams can guide his side through their slump.

"He will certainly be a great manager and he has the qualities needed to become one," said the Frenchman.

The pair enjoyed a successful relationship during their six years together at Highbury, where Adams led Arsenal to a league and cup Double under Wenger's astute guidance in 1998.

But despite offering an endorsement of his former captain's management qualities, Wenger said the transition from a great leader to manager was not an easy progression.

"He (Adams) was a great leader but there is a difference (between being a captain and manager)," he said.

"Natural managers do not exist, I have never met one. If a natural manager exists, he must be in paradise."

Adams needs a good result after Portsmouth were thrashed 4-1 by West Ham at Fratton Park on Boxing Day to slip to 11th in the Premier League table.

His side have been struggling in defence and the team lost one of their leading players when Lassana Diarra signed for Real Madrid.

Wenger also needs his side to return to winning ways after Arsenal drew their previous three league matches, results which have seen them fall to fifth in the table.

Although Adams is certain to receive a standing ovation from Arsenal fans, Wenger insists there will be no room for sentiment when the game kicks off.

"We have one aim: to beat Portsmouth at home on Sunday," he said.
