Shaun Wright-Phillips scored a second-half brace on his Manchester City return as Mark Hughes's side cruised to victory at Sunderland.

City took the lead through Stephen Ireland who side-footed the ball home after Danny Collins had deflected Michael Johnson's cross into his path.

Wright-Phillips then pounced at the back post to make it 2-0 tapping home Jo's cross-cum-shot from close range.

He then flicked Michael Ball's long ball past Craig Gordon for 3-0.

Sunderland were well beaten, but started the game brightly with Grant Leadbitter firing wide from the edge of the area.

Pascal Chimbonda saw his cross deflected against the Manchester City crossbar but it did not take the visitors long to make their mark on this game.

After a quiet start, City striker Jo suddenly burst into life, out-muscling Nyron Nosworthy out wide to sent up Vincent Kompany who saw his shot blocked by Andy Reid.

Jo next saw his strike blocked by Collins, with the resulting corner almost sliced into his own net by Kieran Richardson.

Richardson came close to opening the scoring for Sunderland after latching on to a poor defensive pass across the edge of the area.

But after finding himself one on one with Joe Hart, his second touch was heavy and the ball travelled out of play.

Sunderland forward El Hadji Diouf also went close with a back-post header but it was City who took the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Johnson found space out wide after Ireland's clever pass and his eventual cross was cleared by Collins into the path of Ireland who side-footed past Gordon from eight yards out.

While the first-half was relatively even, the second was one way traffic.

Wright-Phillips, who had only signed from Chelsea on Thursday, bossed the second-half on his return to Manchester City.

He was central to everything they did and got his name on the scoresheet with five minutes of the second-half gone.

Jo dragged his shot across goal to where Wright-Phillips found himself unmarked to tap home from four yards out for 2-0.

The pint-sized winger then went in search of more glory and soon grabbed his second of the game.

Ball launched a hopeful pass forward which Wright-Phillips latched on to and after out-pacing Bardsley he superbly lifted the ball over Gordon for 3-0.

It secured the points and killed the game with the remaining 30 minutes notable only for Sunderland's indiscipline.

Bardsley, David Healy and Richardson all found themselves booked for crude challenges while Chimbonda was yellow carded for dissent and Reid was lucky to escape punishment himself.

Healy, on for Cisse late-on, came close with a late drive, but Hart was equal to the Sunderland striker's effort.

Victory, their second of the season, lifted Manchester City to third in what has been a good week for Hughes's side.

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes:
"I'm delighted with the performance, especially after our exertions in Europe in midweek.

"We were excellent from start to finish and got the goals when we needed them.

"I'm delighted for Shaun. It's great day for him and I'm sure he'll remember that performance for a long time.

"He's written his own story today and will rightly grab all the headlines."

Sunderland manager Roy Keane:
"To say I'm disappointed would be an understatement and we have no complaints about the result.

"City were stronger and quicker and looked dangerous on the break and there were not a lot of positives out there today.

"We had an off day and if that happens in the Premier League you get punished.

"It's a hard one to take and we'll have to learn the lessons from that and react in a positive way."
