Football's January sales
By Nathan Mercer

With the transfer window reopening for clubs in England on 1 January, the fate of many Premier League teams could be decided by their dealings over the next month.

While the league's elite look to fine-tune their squads, those at the bottom will scour the market in search of a saviour to keep them afloat.

The African Cup of Nations, scheduled for 20 January-10 February, will leave 15 of the 20 top-flight clubs short of at least one player, while long-term injuries may also force a manager into action.

BBC Sport looks at what each club needs and who is likely to move on during a hectic 31 days.

ARSENAL

What they need?
Goalkeeper cover if Jens Lehmann decides to move on and a centre-back to fill in for Africa Cup of Nations-bound Kolo Toure.

Possible activity
Manager Arsene Wenger will lose Toure and Emmanuel Eboue to the African Cup of Nations in January and despite recalling Johann Djourou from loan at Birmingham, he may need to strengthen in central defence.

Thomas Sorensen or Barnsley's Heinz Muller have been tipped to come in as a back-up keeper should Lehmann move back to Germany. Lassana Diarra and Gilberto Silva have voiced their concern about a lack of games and may also look to leave.

Who have they been linked with?
Micah Richards, Sorensen, Tresor Mputu, Artur Boruc, Muller.

Who do you want them to buy?
"All we are lacking is a centre-back."

ASTON VILLA

What they need?
A right-back as well as a striker to complement John Carew.

Possible activity
Olof Mellberg has long been touted for a move to the continent which would leave Villa short in defence. Jose Bosingwa from Porto or Valencia's Miguel would be welcome additions, while Scott Carson should tie up a permanent deal.

Who have they been linked with?
Alberto Rodriguez, Bosingwa, Miguel, Carson (permanent), Giles Barnes, Jermain Defoe.

Who do you want them to buy?
"I would try to go for Wes Brown, Eidur Gudjohnsen and also Giles Barnes from Derby"
giantvilla

BIRMINGHAM

What they need?
A central defender

Possible activity
Carson Yeung's failed takeover will not have dented Alex McLeish's resources and owners David Sullivan and David Gold will back their new manager in the market.

The Scotland stars who excelled under him in Euro 2008 qualification are expected to be targeted, while Martin Taylor may be the first of many to be offloaded.

Who have they been linked with?
The majority of the Scotland national team - Kris Boyd, James McFadden, Kenny Miller, Barry Ferguson, Alan Hutton, Gary Naysmith

Who do you want them to buy?
"I personally would like us go after Leroy Lita"

BLACKBURN

What they need?
An extra defender may come in handy after an alarming leakage of goals recently.

Possible activity
Boss Mark Hughes has admitted he is short of cash so low-key signings such as Rosenborg's Yssouf Kone and Barnsley keeper Heinz Muller could be the only incomings.

Jason Roberts has been squeezed out of the picture up front and may seek refuge at Derby.

Who have they been linked with?
Kone, Muller, Lance Davids.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Think selling Robbie and Mokoena, and then investing in the midfield during January is probably our best bet for getting the season back on track."
tombo1984

BOLTON

What they need?
A central defender and a striker should Nicolas Anelka decide to move on.

Possible activity
Gary Megson will have his first chance of dipping into the market as Bolton boss but his main task will be to find a replacement for Anelka who looks certain to leave the Reebok - Javier Saviola from Real Madrid might do the trick.

Who have they been linked with?
Saviola, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Daniel Cousin, Zoltan Gera.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Daniel Cousin - I think he would be a good replacement for Anelka"
icegeezer

CHELSEA

What they need?
Cover in all positions

Possible activity
Avram Grant's squad will be among the hardest hit by the African Cup of Nations while lengthy injuries to key players John Terry, Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard will further reduce Grant's options, so don't expect many departures.

The endless supply of money at Grant's disposal puts them at the front of the queue to sign Luka Modric and Nicolas Anelka, while those Ronaldinho rumours have yet to subside. Some reports even claim that a move for Anelka is almost a done deal.

Who have they been linked with?
Micah Richards, David Villa, Daniel Alves, Modric, Ronaldinho, Anelka.

Who do you want them to buy?
"I am a keen admirer of Kenwyne Jones. Ronaldinho is still spoken about as well. I think we will get Anelka."
Lampard is a true blue

DERBY

What they need?
Points more than anything. To get them they'll need central defenders, a goalscorer and an influential midfielder.

Possible activity
Retaining Giles Barnes will be difficult for boss Paul Jewell and a substantial West Ham offer could be too good to pass up. Arturo Lupoli impressed during his loan spell last season and Jewell may try to bring the Fiorentina striker back for a second stint.

Who have they been linked with?
Calum Davenport, David Nugent, Lupoli, Bobo Balde, Kevin Kilbane.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Lupoli certainly has the skill but he was a bit lightweight last season."
KingKevRulesOK

EVERTON

What they need?
Central midfielder, left midfielder.

Possible activity
Boss David Moyes is believed to be keeping tabs on Valencia's David Albelda and Manuel Fernandes but James McFadden is out of favour and might fancy a loan return to Scotland. La Liga may come calling for Mikel Arteta, but Moyes can ill afford to lose his most influential midfielder.

Who have they been linked with?
Justin Hoyte, Yohan Mollo, Johan Vogel, Albelda, Fernandes.

Who do you want them to buy?
"I reckon we should bid for PSV's Hedwiges Maduro if we want to reach the final of the UEFA Cup."
DrFreakfish

FULHAM

What they need?
Experience in defence, a holding midfielder and a proven goalscorer.

Possible activity
Former boss Lawrie Sanchez spent close to 30m during the summer so new manager Roy Hodgson may have to make the most of those already present to help keep the Cottagers up. Hodgson will however dip into his extensive contacts book and seek to bring in a star or two.

Who have they been linked with?
Kyle Lafferty, Patrick Kisnorbo, Matthew Taylor.

Who do you want them to buy?
"I've been hearing rumours that Michael Parkhurst might be moving to Fulham. He's only 23 and I think would be a good buy"
spleenmachine17

LIVERPOOL

What they need?
A central defender to cover for the injured Daniel Agger.

Possible activity
Manager Rafael Benitez has made clear to Liverpool's owners the importance of spending big in January. His American employers, however, have been less enthusiastic and may not sanction a spending spree.

Benitez may rekindle his interest in AC Milan's Kakha Kaladze but Peter Crouch may seek a regular starting spot elsewhere and Javier Mascherano's permanent move is in limbo.

Who have they been linked with?
Ezequiel Garay, David Villa, Tomas Ujfalusi, Kaladze.

Who do you want them to buy?
"An ideal player for Liverpool would be Robinho. He could play on either flank or up front."
Scowen62

MANCHESTER CITY

What they need?
A big-name striker and another goalkeeper should Andreas Isaksson depart.

Possible activity
Owner Thaksin Shinawatra has given boss Sven-Goran Eriksson the green light to splash the cash this winter. That could mean the arrival of Peter Crouch or Nicolas Anelka, while Nery Castillo has already been snapped up on loan.

Eriksson should also tie up a deal for Palermo's Mark Bresciano after failing to get his man in the summer.

Who have they been linked with?
Crouch, Alfonso Alves, Anelka, Michael Owen, Adriano, Bresciano, Luka Modric.

Who do you want them to buy?
"I would put a bid in for 25m for Modric just in case we are going to get out-bidded."
Cityblue1984

MANCHESTER UNITED

What they need?
Not a lot, but full-backs on both flanks wouldn't do any harm.

Possible activity
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has already identified the need for a left-back, but the right-back slot would need attention if Wes Brown continues to stall on a new deal.

Ferguson could also be tempted to move for Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov, but after spending close to 70m in the summer, he may not have the funds to splash.

Who have they been linked with?
Philipp Lahm, Nicolas Anelka, Berbatov, Miguel Veloso, Branislav Ivanovic, Willy Sagnol, Alan Hutton.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Sitting top of the league, with all our rivals slipping away, do we need to make any January transfer dealings?"
douglasmcdouglas

MIDDLESBROUGH

What they need?
Boro remain desperately light in attack so a striker and a creative midfielder will be needed.

Possible activity
Boss Gareth Southgate will have a fight to keep hold of Tottenham target Stewart Downing, while also bolstering his attacking options.

Heerenveen's Afonso Alves would be the ambitious option, with Sheffield United's in-form striker James Beattie a more likely arrival if he makes a quick recovery from injury.

Who have they been linked with?
Ilco Naumoski, Beattie, Kevin Nolan, Arda Turan, Afonso Alves.

Who do you want them to buy?
"We also need a keeper as Skippy is not getting any younger and I don't rate Brad."
boro4lifeAKA cena-rules

NEWCASTLE

What they need?
A new back four might help, creativity up front and cover during the African Cup of Nations.

Possible activity
The Newcastle board may well be presented a long list of targets by boss Sam Allardyce with a top-class defender presumably at the top of it. Brazilian Edmilson, Alan Hutton and Wes Brown have all been linked with Newcastle, while promising Swindon left-back Ben Tozer will arrive imminently.

Toon fans are crying out for attractive football so Allardyce might want to appease them with a playmaker. Shola Ameobi, Stephen Carr and Celestine Babayaro all look certain to depart.

Who have they been linked with?
Brown, Hutton, Edmilson, Peter Crouch, Tozer, Ivica Dragutinovic, Andrey Arshavin, Luis Garcia.

Who do you want them to buy?
"The main players we need are a young back-up full-back and a creative midfielder: Zuiverloon and Arshavin."
zeTom1

PORTSMOUTH

What they need?
Cover in midfield and up front

Possible activity
Pompey are struggling to find the net at Fratton Park even with their African contingent in the squad. So with Papa Bouba Diop, Sulley Muntari, John Utaka and Kanu all heading to the Nations Cup, boss Harry Redknapp will be forced to work his magic in the market.

Loan deals should make up most of Redknapp's business although he may be tempted by a big-money move for Barcelona's Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Who have they been linked with?
Jermain Defoe, Tiago Gomes, Peter Crouch, Gudjohnsen, Fernando Meira, Fabrice Pancrate.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Hedwiges Maduro should be in Portsmouth in the next 36 hours to sign a contract with Pompey."
DrFreakfish

READING

What they need?
Central defender, right midfielder.

Potential activity
Manager Steve Coppell rarely breaks the bank during the transfer window but he may be tempted to this time around, particularly with the Royals recording record turnover this year.

Nancy defender Sebastien Puygrenier would be a useful addition at 3m as would Matthew Taylor and Bobby Zamora for similar prices.

Who have they been linked with?
Gary O'Neil, Taylor, Zamora, Puygrenier, Ben Watson, Michael Mifsud, Seyi Olofinjana

Who do you want them to buy?
"Michael Kightly from Wolves to play right midfield"
MarcoBoogers82

SUNDERLAND

What they need?
A holding midfielder, another goalscorer and plenty of experience.

Possible activity
Robbie Savage looks set to arrive and attempt to do the job Roy Keane did at Manchester United. Keane may also turn to his former club to help shore up his defence with Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson favourites to move.

Niall Quinn will make plenty of money available for his manager but Keane may be a little more cautious after splashing out over 30m in the summer.

Who have they been linked with?
Bobo Balde, Simpson, Evans, Stephen Hunt, Gary Cahill, Phil Bardsley, Savage, Jason Roberts, Fitz Hall.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Spurs' Wayne Routledge or Scott Sinclair from Chelsea both have great pace and we would have a fair chance of signing them."
rokerender

TOTTENHAM

What they need?
Centre-back, left-back and left-sided midfield player.

Potential activity
Juande Ramos has steadied the ship since taking over in October but may still look to make his mark in the transfer window.

Chris Gunter will come in as cover for Gareth Bale and Ramos may raid former club Sevilla to strengthen further. Unsettled Jermain Defoe and Dimitar Berbatov have been linked with moves away, but may wait until the summer before moving on.

Who have they been linked with?
Alexander Kerzhakov, Luka Modric, Lassana Diarra, Wes Brown, Julien Escude, Daniel Alves, Dani Jarque, Urby Emanuelson.

Who do you want them to buy?
"No doubt we'll sign a few more kids and fringe players but continue to be linked with every man, woman and child with a left foot valued at over 20m"
TottenhamMattSpurs

WEST HAM

What they need?
Some luck on the injury front, creative midfielder.

Possible activity
Giles Barnes and Nicky Shorey are the most likely arrivals and chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson is unlikely to stand in Alan Curbishley's way should he want to recruit Juventus' Tiago.

Who have they been linked with?
Darren Bent, Barnes, Shorey, Tiago, Djibril Cisse, Atiba Hutchinson, Andrew Johnson

Who do you want them to buy?
"Why oh why would we want Darren Bent? He has not cut it at Spurs and at 10m that would be a pretty bad gamble "
Billericay_Iron

WIGAN

What they need?
A striker, left-back and a midfielder.

Possible activity
Chairman Dave Whelan is likely to dig deep into his pockets to provide Steve Bruce with the war chest he needs to keep Wigan afloat. But attracting big-name players to the JJB Stadium may prove Bruce's hardest task.

Robbie Savage is top of the list followed by making permanent Luis Antonio Valencia's loan deal from Villarreal.

Who have they been linked with?
Gary Cahill, Jonathan Walters, Damien Johnson, Savage, Valencia (permanent), Paul Robinson (West Brom), Kris Commons.

Who do you want them to buy?
"Andy Johnson is having a poor season so Everton may be interested in a deal. James Beattie, Matt Derbyshire of Blackburn on loan. We do need someone big"
