Burley warns Everton and Bolton
By Ian Hughes

Derby boss George Burley has warned Everton and Bolton that their involvement in Europe next season could harm their Premiership campaigns.

Burley suffered relegation with Ipswich in 2001 - a year after finishing fifth in the Premiership - as Town struggled with the extra demands of the Uefa Cup.

He told BBC Sport: "Everton and Bolton have to be a little bit wary.

"Europe can have an adverse effect when you're not a big club. The extra games can bring disadvantages as well."

Everton's fourth-place finish means they will have the chance to qualify for the Champions League group stages, while Bolton will compete in the Uefa Cup.

Duo 'magnificent'

And Burley, who has led Derby to this season's Championship play-offs, was full of praise for the achievements of Everton boss David Moyes and Bolton manager Sam Allardyce.

He added: "It's getting more and more difficult [in the Premiership]. The top teams have huge resources.

"But Moyes and Allardyce have shown you can compete. What they have done on smaller resources is magnificent."

Burley was named Manager of the Year in 2000 for steering Ipswich to fifth and into the Uefa Cup.

It was a departure from the usual trend of the award going to the boss of the top team in the country.

Some feel there is a case for it to happen again, with Moyes and Allardyce possible recipients, but Burley remained diplomatic.

"It's for others to decide whether Moyes' and Allardyce's achievements are more impressive than Jose Mourinho's," he said.

"But you can't take anything away from Chelsea this season - even with the money he has had to spend.

"All the managers have done tremendously well with what they've got."
