Man Utd 1-3 Chelsea
Chelsea celebrate Tiago's (l) goal
Champions Chelsea came from behind to beat Manchester United 3-1 and create a new Premiership points record of 94.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy's superb finish from close-range gave United an early lead, though thereafter the home side struggled to break down Chelsea.

Tiago produced a wonderful equaliser, surprising Roy Carroll with an arcing shot, while his pass set up Eidur Gudjohnsen, who dinked in the second.

Joe Cole added to United's misery, converting a Frank Lampard cross.

The win put Chelsea on 94 points with one match to go of their 38-game season, surpassing Manchester United's record total of 92 in 1993/4, which was a 42-game campaign.

The victory also meant the Blues have broken the Old Trafford club's record of 28 wins in a 38-game Premiership season.

Chelsea's defence is also on course to concede the fewest number of goals in a season, with Van Nistelrooy's goal the 14th they have conceded in the league.

Arsenal hold the record in the Premiership era, having conceded 17 in the 1998-99 season, although the all-time mark was set by Liverpool, who let in just 16 in 1978-79.

Both those records will be smashed if Chelsea can concede one or fewer goals at Newcastle on Sunday.

At Old Trafford, Chelsea might have done better to clear the corner that led to Van Nistelrooy's goal, but from that point on Jose Mourinho's side mounted a superb rearguard action.

Robert Huth got in the way of numerous United shots, while Ricardo Carvalho produced a superb tackle to take the ball away from Van Nistelrooy.

The United team formed a guard of honour to welcome the Chelsea side before the start, though the reception given by the Old Trafford crowd was more mixed, with plenty of booing amid the more gracious applause.

With the formalities over, United were quickly into an attacking rhythm, notably Cristiano Ronaldo, who twice went close with shots.

The second of those efforts produced a corner after Carlo Cudicini was unable to gather the ball.

Chelsea failed to clear the corner and after Wayne Rooney arrowed a shot into the penalty area, Van Nistelrooy cleverly flicked the ball home.

Tiago's finish was equally stylish, though it came from a considerably greater distance.

There appeared little danger when he picked up the ball but Tiago produced the sweetest of shots that rose and dipped before nestling in the back of net to Carroll's disbelief.

Tiago also set up Gudjohnsen's goal, bypassing the United defence with a wonderfully angled pass to set the Icelandic international free.

Gudjohnsen waited for Carroll to commit himself before clipping the ball over the United keeper.

With Ryan Giggs left out by Sir Alex Ferguson, United laboured to bypass the Chelsea defence.

Van Nistelrooy almost escaped the shackles of Carvalho but the Portuguese defender recovered superbly just as the Dutchman was about to shoot.

Soon after a fluent Chelsea move climaxed with Cole sending a curling shot narrowly wide.

Late in the first half Mikael Silvestre finally provided some width for United setting up Rooney, but the youngster's shot was blocked.

Ten minutes after the restart Fletcher replicated the trajectory of Tiago's shot only to see the effort cannon back off the woodwork.

Gudjohnsen's goal came soon after and United never recovered.

Gaps began to appear in the home side's defence and from one of those Frank Lampard ran into space before crossing for Cole, who prodded the ball home, though television replays showed there was a hint of offside about the goal.
