Everton 0-4 Bolton
Bolton condemned struggling Everton to a humiliating defeat at Goodison Park.

Kevin Davies scrambled home a first-half header to set up a devastating burst of three goals in five minutes from Sam Allardyce's side.

Stelios Giannakopoulos steered home from close range after 75 minutes and Gary Speed added a third from the spot after Nuno Valente fouled Davies.

The Greece star then struck a brilliant fourth with a solo effort as Everton crumbled in embarrassing fashion.

Everton restored midfield duo Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill to their starting line-up in a bid to recover from the midweek loss to West Ham at Goodison Park.

And with a history of stormy meetings between the sides, it was no surprise that Bolton's Davies was booked inside the first minute for a foul on Phil Neville.

The opening exchanges were desperately short on quality, with the game littered with fouls and stoppages.

And when a goal came, it was a scrappy affair entirely in keeping with what had gone before.

Davies's header looped over Everton keeper Richard Wright and just crossed the line despite James Beattie's desperate efforts to scramble the ball away.

The second-half started in equally abysmal fashion, with Arteta wasting a good opportunity for Everton when he curled a free-kick yards off target.

Everton were pressing, but showed little creativity and had yet to force a save out of Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Bolton made a substitution after 65 minutes, replacing Jay-Jay Okocha with Nicky Hunt, to the Nigerian's obvious displeasure.

Everton had the ball in the net in the 71st minute when James McFadden steered home David Weir's header, but the Scot had strayed marginally offside.

And Bolton took full advantage of the reprieve to double their lead with 15 minutes left.

Weir gifted possession to Vaz Te, and he raced forward and set up Stelios for a cool finish past the advancing Wright.

And Everton's misery continued as Speed added a third from the penalty spot four minutes later when Valente was adjudged to have fouled Davies as they competed for an aerial ball.

Speed coolly slotted home the penalty - but the agony was not over for Everton as Stelios quickly added a fourth.

Substitute Leon Osman was caught in possession and Stelios carved through Everton's defence before sending a stunning finish high past the exposed Wright.

  • Everton manager David Moyes: "If you go to the parks on a Sunday morning you will not see goals as bad as the ones we conceded. We had a mad 10 or 15 minutes.

"I will take responsibility because I work and coach the players, but it is very difficult to take responsibility for those goals.

"We have lost by four goals at home and it is very embarrassing for us. I don't feel very good after that."

  • Bolton manager Sam Allardyce: "It was a big result. When Everton tired we picked them off, which is a sign of growing confidence and of a team getting used to what it takes to win a game, and a team than can change the way it plays to win a game.

"This result is a major, major feat - to come to a club like this and win 4-0 is fantastic for us.

"The score might flatter us a bit, but the quality of our finishing was the best we have had this season."
