Southampton 0-0 Charlton
Southampton's Matt Oakley challenges Radostin Kishishev
Harry Redknapp's wait for his first win as Southampton boss goes on after his side were held at home by Charlton.

Shaun Bartlett and Hermann Hreidarsson both went close with headers as Charlton had the best of a largely forgettable first half.

They stayed on top after the break and Radostin Kishishev's long-range volley nearly sneaked the points, but it was a rare moment of drama.

Brett Ormerod's late header gave Saints fans hope but he was flagged offside.

From the outset it looked like Redknapp's wait for a win would go on, as Charlton, seeking a fourth straight victory, took charge early on.

Rory Delap's error set up a chance for Jerome Thomas, who shot straight at keeper Antti Niemi, before Bartlett's looping header against the bar, and Hreidarsson's diving effort.

Danny Higginbotham's close-range volley on the half-hour was Southampton's first decent chance, and this was soon followed by a good chance for Peter Crouch, which was blocked by Luke Young.

Andreas Jakobsson had to have his wits about him to keep out Danny Murphy's shot as Charlton resumed their dominance as half-time approached.

Crouch wasted a good opportunity before Matthew Oakley came within inches of marking his first start in 16 months with a goal, but saw his shot go just wide of the post.

The second half continued in the same vein, with Charlton having the upper hand but neither side showing much cutting edge in front of goal.

The longer the game went on, the more likely it seemed that one goal would decide it.

Kishishev's long-range volley on the turn nearly broke the deadlock in the closing stages, but it was a rare moment of excitement.

A worrying late injury to Claus Lundekvam rounded off an unsatisfactory afternoon for Southampton.
