Jesper Gronkjaer headed the only goal as Chelsea dominated doomed Leeds on an emotional day for Claudio Ranieri.

Blues boss Ranieri received a rousing reception from the Chelsea fans in what could be his last game in charge but he saw his side waste a host of chances.

Joe Cole, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Frank Lampard all went close.

But it was left to Gronkjaer to head in Glen Johnson's teasing cross to win it while Jermaine Pennant had Leeds' best chance but his free-kick hit the post.

Cole had Chelsea's first chance of a game they totally dominated but the impressive Scott Carson tipped his 18-yard strike over the bar.

The Blues should have gone ahead when Lampard sent Gudjohnsen through but the Icelandic striker lobbed over with just Carson to beat.

But the home side's dominance paid off when Gronkjaer finished off a free-flowing Chelsea move after 20 minutes.

Lampard created space for Glen Johnson and Johnson's pinpoint cross from the byline was headed in from six yards by the unpredictable Gronkjaer for his third goal in three games - but only his third goal of the season.

Cole saw another long-range effort superbly kept out by Carson and Gudjohnsen headed over under pressure as a lifeless Leeds side struggled to get out of their own half.

The incentive of climbing two league places and earning an extra £1m seemed to be lost on the doomed visitors as Chelsea continued to pour forward after the break.

Lampard headed wide at the far post, Gronkjaer screwed a right-foot shot across goal and Cole also had chances to extend the lead.

With the outcome seeing a formality, the home fans took the opportunity to show their support for Ranieri and the Blues boss stepped out of the dugout to acknowledge their chants and applause.

Amazingly Leeds almost drew level when Jermaine Pennant's 25-yard free-kick hit the post.

Chelsea were soon back on top and Lampard had two more long-range attempts and Cole also shot just wide in the final seconds.

But the real excitement was reserved for the end of the match when Ranieri was presented to the crowd as part of the end -of-season celebrations.

The home fans stayed on to show their support for their manager and even owner Ronman Abramovich joined in the applause as Ranieri did a lap of honour. Time will tell whether it was a final farewell.
