Blackburn 1-2 Portsmouth
Portsmouth scorer Teddy Sheringham
Portsmouth boosted their Premiership survival hopes with their first away win of the season.

The Premiership strugglers went ahead through Teddy Sheringham's free-kick, but Blackburn levelled when Tugay's deflected shot beat Shaka Hislop.

Blackburn, without a home win in seven, looked more threatening after the break but failed to make the most of it.

And they were punished when Aiyegbeni Yakubu drilled home an 82nd-minute winner for Harry Redknapp's side.

It could prove costly for Graeme Souness' inconsistent side, who are still not safe from relegation.

After their impressive win over high-flying Aston Villa last weekend, they were hoping to continue that form against a side who began the day with the joint worst away record.

But it was Portsmouth who began the brighter and Matthew Taylor was unlucky not to open the scoring after 12 minutes.

Taylor broke into the Blackburn box and beat keeper Brad Friedel but his effort was cleared off the line by Craig Short.

KEY MOMENTS
17 mins: Teddy Sheringham's free-kick gives Pompey the lead
37 mins: Blackburn equalise through Tugay's deflected shot
82 mins: Yakubu hits the winner for Portsmouth
The visitors deservedly took the lead five minutes later after Andy Todd fouled Yakubu just outside the box.

Friedel got his hand to Sheringham's 20-yard free-kick but could not stop the former England striker's shot, only his side's seventh away goal of the season.

But Portsmouth could not hang on to their lead.

Brett Emerton's corner found Tugay on the edge of the box and his shot came off both Yakubu and Taylor before nestling in the back of the net.

Blackburn emerged from the half-time break energised, and might have gone ahead through Garry Flitcroft but his header from Emerton's cross flew inches wide.

The hosts continued to press but could not create any clear-cut chances and Portsmouth took full advantage.

Redknapp's decision to replace Sheringham with on-loan Newcastle striker Lomana LuaLua paid dividends.

In the 82nd minute, the lively LuaLua went on a weaving run and cut inside before he was challenged by Lucas Neill.

The ball ran only to Yakubu who followed his winner against Southampton last Sunday with an unstoppable right-foot shot to seal a second straight victory for Portsmouth.

The result moves Portsmouth out of the bottom three, although they could return there if Leicester defeat Liverpool on Sunday.
