SATURDAY'S MATCHES
Chelsea suffered their first home league defeat of the season
|
John Terry scored a last-minute own goal as Bolton came from behind to shock Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Claudio Ranieri's team needed a victory to reclaim top spot in the Premiership after Manchester United had leap-frogged them by beating Manchester City earlier in the day.
When Hernan Crespo deservedly put Chelsea in front midway through the first-half it seemed as though the home team would go on to comfortably defeat Sam Allardyce's Bolton.
But Bruno N'Gotty scored an equaliser just before the break and Terry deflected Henrik Pedersen's shot into his own net in the final minute of normal time.
Chelsea paid the price for failing to turn possession into goals and slipped to the first home defeat of the season, while Bolton's refusal to buckle under pressure was rewarded with their first win at Stamford Bridge since December 1975.

KEY MOMENTS
22 mins: Crespo scores for Chelsea
39 mins: N'Gotty heads Bolton level
90 mins: Terry scores an own goal
|
Crespo had the ball in the Bolton goal after 13 minutes but the goal was ruled out for a handball against the Argentine.
The Chelsea striker did not have to wait much longer to get on the scoresheet.
John Terry flicked Damien Duff's whipped corner goalwards and Crespo headed the ball home from short range.
Adrian Mutu might have scored shortly before Crespo's 22-minute opener but drilled his shot narrowly wide after running at the Bolton goal from the half-way line.
Mutu and Crespo were both inches away from converting a low driven ball across the face of goal by Duff as Chelsea threatened to score again.
Ivan Campo had bundled the ball into the Chelsea net three minutes after his team had conceded with one of the visitor's rare forays into the opposition half.
The goal was ruled out for a foul by Per Frandsen on Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini but Bolton's refusal to buckle under the home team's constant pressure was rewarded with an equaliser.
Youri Djorkaeff delivered a free-kick from the right touchline and N'Gotty climbed highest to head home.
Chelsea continued to dominate possession throughout the second half but, as with large periods of the opening 45 minutes, their precise passing through midfield petered out in the final third.
Mutu could not quite reach a teasing cross from Gronkjaer and Jussi Jaaskelainen cleared the danger.

Frandsen almost silenced Stamford Bridge with a rasping long-range drive that Cudicini just managed to tip over his crossbar for a corner.
Ranieri introduced Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for Gronkjaer in a bid to add a cutting edge to his team's approach play.
But it was Bolton who scored the winner.
Johnson almost scored an own goal, but Cudicini made a good save.
Moments later Pedersen's shot struck Terry, deceived Cudicini and went into the Chelsea goal for a famous winner.
