Portsmouth top Premiership
Teddy Sheringham in action against Bolton
We collapsed - it was an embarrassing and diabolical performance in the last 25 minutes

Portsmouth 4-0 Bolton

Portsmouth went top of the Premiership table and Teddy Sheringham scored a second-half hat-trick as Bolton were thrashed at Fratton Park.

Pompey needed to win by four clear goals to nudge Manchester City from the summit of the early-season table - and they did just that despite only drawing 0-0 at the break.

Steve Stone was also on target for Pompey, who beat Aston Villa in their first game and then drew with Manchester City.

Chances were few and far between in the first half.

A 25-yard effort from Patrik Berger flew straight at Jussi Jaaskelainen, a free-kick from Sheringham was touched wide, and Yakubu Ayegbini was denied when the Bolton goalkeeper dived at his feet.

But within 12 minutes of the re-start, Portsmouth were two goals to the good.

Stone bundled home from close range on 47 minutes after Jaaskelainen could only parry Berger's shot.

Then Sheringham headed home from 10 yards out from Boris Zivkovic's left-wing cross for his second goal of the season.

Kevin Davies, Bolton's summer signing, went close with a header just two minutes after Sheringham's goal.

Trotters boss Sam Allardyce also brought on on-loan Brazilian striker Mario Jardel in an effort to rescue something from the game.

But it was Portsmouth who looked more like adding to the scoring, with the inspirational Berger firing just over from 30 yards.

Sheringham grabbed his second of the night and his third of the season near the end, slotting home from close-range after good work by Stone.

The former Manchester United striker then completed his hat-trick from the spot after Ivan Campo had brought down Vincent Pericard.
