Arsenal march on
Saturday's English Premiership round-up

Robert Pires scored Arsenal's winning goal

Arsenal maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 victory at Liverpool - but the game was over-shadowed by an injury to England striker Micheal Owen.

Owen will have a scan on Sunday after hurting his ankle to determine if he will be fit for the Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey next Saturday.

Harry Kewell put Liverpool in front with his first league goal since his summer move from Leeds as Arsenal were overpowered early on.

Owen wasted two great chances to put the game beyond Arsenal before the Gunners levelled when Edu's header deflected off Sami Hyypia.

Robert Pires hit a stunning winner to leave Liverpool nine points adrift of Arsenal who remain a point clear at the top.

Manchester United remain just behind Arsenal after a 3-0 victory at home to Birmingham City.

Ruud van Nistelrooy gave United the lead from the penalty spot after City had keeper Maik Taylor sent off for hauling down Paul Scholes.

And it was Scholes who added United's second with a low shot after being set up by Phil Neville.

Ryan Giggs rounded off an impressive display from Sir Alex Ferguson's side with the third.

Newcastle United finally won a Premiership game as they saw off Southampton 1-0 at St James' Park.

Alan Shearer was the home hero with his 250th career league goal on the stroke of half time

Caretaker boss David Pleat boosted his chances of landing the Tottenham job permanently as his side beat Everton 3-0 at White Hart Lane.

Fredi Kanoute's spectacular opener put Spurs in command and further goals from Gus Poyet and Robbie Keane straight after the re-start left Everton reeling.

Leeds United boss Peter Reid repaid some of the faith shown in him this week as his under-pressure side beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Elland Road.

Reid received a rapturous welcome from the home fans and they were cheering again when Seth Johnson gave them an early lead after a Brad Friedel error.

Johnson, who last scored in February, quickly doubled Leeds' advantage to put Reid's side on course for victory.

Blackburn gave Leeds a late fright when Dino Baggio pulled a goal back.

Fulham continued their impressive run as they triumphed 2-0 at home to Leicester City.

Luis Boa Morte's 36th-minute effort separated the sides at the interval after the Cottagers did most of the attacking.

And Boa Morte made certain of all three points for Chris Coleman's side who saw but Steed Malbranque miss a penalty.

Charlton came back from behind to earn a 2-1 win against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.

Teddy Sheringham netted his sixth goal in eight Premiership games for Pompey when his header from a Tim Sherwood corner gave them an interval lead.

But Charlton fought back after the break and substitute Jonathan Fortune equalised before Shaun Bartlett hit an injury-time winner to shatter Portsmouth.

Wolves recorded their first victory in the Premiership as they deservedly beat Manchester City 1-0 at Molineux.

Dave Jones' side dominated and had a string of first-half chances with David Seaman kept busy in the City goal.

Colin Cameron, who went close several times, hit the winner in the 75th minute - but Wolves remain bottom of the table.
