Van Nistelrooy nets Golden Boot

Van Nistelrooy beat Thierry Henry by one goal

Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy won the Premiership's Golden Boot after scoring his 25th goal of the season in the 2-1 win at Everton.

Van Nistelrooy converted a 78th-minute penalty at Goodison Park to finish one goal ahead of last year's top scorer, Arsenal's Thierry Henry.

Henry had moved level on 24 goals with Van Nistelrooy after scoring just seven minutes into his side's 4-0 win at Sunderland.

24 Thierry Henry (Arsenal)
23 James Beattie (Soton)
20 Mark Viduka (Leeds)
19 Michael Owen (Liverpool)
17 Alan Shearer (Newcastle)

But he was then denied by a string of fine saves from Sunderland keeper Thomas Sorensen and had to settle for his two player of the year awards.

Southampton's James Beattie, who started the final day on 23 goals, could not improve his total in the 1-0 win at Manchester City.

Van Nistelrooy finished the season with 44 goals in all competitions and his goal at Everton made him the first Manchester United player ever to score in 10 successive games.
