Charlton ended their eight-match winless run with victory over FA Cup finalists Southampton at The Valley.

Scott Parker's fine individual goal set Charlton on their way, with a goal against the run of first-half play.

Kevin Lisbie's looping header sealed the points for the Addicks who had lost their previous four Premiership matches, with James Beattie's 90th minute goal was mere consolation.

Goalkeeper Dean Kiely produced a string of good saves as Southampton dominated the first half, although Charlton always carried a potent threat on the break.

A rampaging run from Wayne Bridge down the left flank saw the England defender whip in a fourth minute cross that James Beattie threw himself at, and just failed to make contact.

Shaun Bartlett's physical presence set up a chance for Parker, whose prod was palmed away by Paul Jones, and Parker then fired over the bar after David Prutton's slip let him in.

Beattie showed his confidence when he let fly from long-range and Kiely produced an alert save to deny the England striker.

Kiely was the busiest of the keepers in the first-half, dropping to his save another pot-shot from Beattie, and the Addicks keeper then showed his bravery as he dived at Bridge's feet to deny the England full-back.

But just as Southampton seemed to be turning the screw, Charlton took the lead through a brilliant individual goal from Parker.

The PFA Young Player of the Year candidate picked up the ball and ran at a retreating Southampton defence before slotting his shot across Jones for his fourth goal of the season.

Southampton continued to force the pace but Charlton were always a danger on the break and a quick break from Lisbie saw him swap passes with Jason Euell to draw a good save from Jones.

HAPPY VALLEY
32 mins: Scott Parker's individual goal puts Charlton ahead.
50 mins: Kevin Lisbie's header makes it 2-0.
90 mins: James Beattie gives Saints late hope.

The Saints had two great chances to level before the break but failed to take either.

Brett Ormerod caught Jonathan Fortune in possession and surged into the box where he had Beattie square but opted to shoot and was denied by another fine save from Keily.

Matthew Oakley then burst into the Charlton area but from eight yards out blasted over the bar.

Charlton needed the cushion of a second goal and got it five minutes into the second half.

Claus Jensen floated in a free-kick and Lisbie rose unopposed to loop a back header over Jones.

Southampton's response was instant, with Ormerod's close range effort cleared off the line.

Charlton were growing in confidence and Konchesky drove narrowly wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Fortune was denied a third for Charlton by Jones' fine save but Beattie threw Southampton the latest of lifelines.

The England striker took advantage of hesitation to lob Kiely to take re-take the lead for the Premiership's Golden Boot.
