Newcastle stun Everton
Newcastle celebrate Alan Shearer's goal
Cometh the hour, Shearer celebrates his goal
Newcastle 2-1 Everton

Newcastle broke Everton's stubborn resistance and their hearts with two late goals to snatch a dramatic win at St James' Park.

Everton, reduced to 10 men following Joseph Yobo's first-half dismissal, led through Kevin Campbell's 16th-minute goal.

They looked set for a seventh successive win which would have seen them leapfrog over Merseyside rivals Liverpool into second place.

It will be up there in my top three goals

Newcastle striker Alan Shearer

But with six minutes left, Alan Shearer cracked in a stunning volley to level the scores.

And midweek villain Craig Bellamy turned into a hero with the winner two minutes from time.

Newcastle were determined to subject Everton's defence to trial by pace early on.

Key incidents
16 mins: Campbell fires Everton ahead
21 mins: Yobo is sent off
84 mins: Shearer levels in spectacular style
88 mins: Bellamy snatches the winner

Kieron Dyer's heels were clipped by David Unsworth in the second minute for a free-kick which Laurent Robert blasted over the bar.

Dyer then wriggled to the by-line where Li Tie just got a foot in to smuggle his pull back away from Shearer.

Referee Mark Halsey waved away penalty appeals when Bellamy tumbled under Tony Hibbert's challenge.

Having ridden the early storm, Everton delivered a sucker punch in taking the lead on 16 minutes.

Newcastle's defensive deficiencies were again laid bare as Unsworth's long pass eliminated Stephen Caldwell and Andy O'Brien.

Campell chested the ball down to tuck it past Given to maintain his record of having scored in each of his last five visits to St James' Park.

Everton's backs were pinned firmly against the wall on 21 minutes when Yobo was sent off for pulling down Bellamy.

Wright epitomised Everton's determination to hold on to their lead with a stunning reaction save to beat away Shearer's bullet header.

Inevitably, the pattern of the second half saw Newcastle trying to batter their way through the solid blue wall.

I thought Newcastle had tried everything and had nothing left

Everton manager David Moyes

Everton's cause was helped by poor delivery from Newcastle's normally reliable wide men, Robert and Nolberto Solano.

Newcastle went close on the hour when O'Brien thumped a shot inches wide from 22 yards.

Wright stood his ground again at the near post to beat away Solano's shot after Alan Stubbs' weary-looking clearance broke to him.

But just as Everton appeared to be heading for victory, Shearer popped up to thump an unstoppable volley past Wright from 22 yards.

Newcastle were not content with a point and with two minutes left, Bellamy's shot from a tight angle took a deflection off Li Tie to wrong- foot Wright, who reacted slowly at the near post.
