Top two both crash
James Beattie scored twice for super Saints
English Premiership round-up
Front-runners Arsenal and Liverpool both crashed to defeats, while third-place Chelsea were held to a draw on a dramatic day.
Leaders Arsenal slipped to a 3-2 defeat at Southampton. Dennis Bergkamp volleyed the Gunners ahead but James Beattie levelled on the stroke of half-time from 25 yards. Arsenal were stunned when Sol Campbell was red-carded for hauling down Agustin Delgado and Beattie put Saints 2-1 up from the spot. Saints struck again through Delgado before Robert Pires netted Arsenal's second. Liverpool's poor recent form continued as they lost 3-2 at Fulham.
Sava was involved again when a Sean Davis deflected off him to put Fulham 2-0 up. Liverpool pulled one back with a stunning 30-yard shot from Dietmar Hamann only for Sava to score again. Milan Baros put Liverpool back in the game after Fulham had Alain Goma sent off, but the Cottagers held on. Manchester United finally found their goal touch as they swept Newcastle aside 5-3 at Old Trafford.
Alan Shearer scored his 100th goal for Newcastle from a free-kick, with Olivier Bernard and Craig Bellamy also on target. Bolton Wanderers earned a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. The Blues fell behind when Henrik Pedersen scored against the run of play. Chelsea's lost Celestine Babayaro to a red card before Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink grabbed an injury-time equaliser. Everton made it six wins on the trot as they edged out West Brom 1-0 at Goodison Park.
Middlesbrough beat Manchester City 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium. Ugo Ehiogu and Alen Boksic put Boro in command before Nicolas Anelka reduced the deficit. City had Shaun Wright-Phillips dismissed for a second booking before Geremi netted Boro's third. Aston Villa enjoyed a 4-1 victory over rock-bottom West Ham. Lee Hendrie's third goal of the season broke the deadlock and Oyvind Leonhardsen doubled Villa's lead. Paolo Di Canio pulled one back before Dion Dublin and Darius Vassell make sure for Villa. Birmingham snatched a dramatic late 1-0 victory at Sunderland. Clinton Morrison bagged the winner in injury time to lift Birmingham seven points clear of the bottom spot. |
