Jones' gift to Baggies
West Brom's Sean Gregan scores his side's winner
Sean Gregan lets rip to score Albion's winner
West Brom 1-0 Southampton

Southampton goalkeeper Paul Jones' error gifted West Bromwich Albion a third successive Premiership victory.

Jones' let Sean Gregan's speculative 79th minute 40-yard shot slip from his grasp, unravelling all Saints' sound defensive work.

Southampton striker Marian Pahars wasted two good chances to put his side ahead, but it was the Baggies who claimed the points.

Pahars, who sealed Saints' first win of the season in midweek, wasted a golden chance to put his side ahead on 17 minutes, firing wide with only keeper Russell Hoult to beat after Rory Delap sent him clear.

Hoult then gratefully saw the ball drift out of play after he misjudged Wayne Bridge's punt forward.

Albion were struggling to make headway against Saints rugged central defensive pairing.

Lee Hughes was booked on 25 minutes for his reaction after being roughed out of possession by Paul Williams.

Defender Neil Clement created Albion's first good opening when he broke down the left and flashed the ball across the six-yard box.

Igor Balis found himself clear after swapping passes with Jason Roberts, but failed to hit the target as he lashed the ball across the face of goal.

On the stroke of half-time, Phil Gilchrist came to Albion's rescue, haring back to clear the ball off the line after James Beattie headed the ball over the advancing Hoult.

Albion boss Gary Megson made two changes at half-time, replacing Lee Hughes and Ronnie Wallwork with Scott Dobie and Larus Sigurdsson.

The Baggies stepped up the tempo at the start of the second-half, but the Southampton defence stood firm.

Bridge showed his England pace as he twice matched Roberts as the Albion striker threatened to break.

Oakley's pass put Pahars clean through again, but Hoult read the Latvian striker's intentions and dived left to save.

Megson played his last card when he replaced Jason Koumas with Daniele Dichio.

  Key moments
17 mins: Pahars misses when clean through.
44 mins: Gilchrist clears Beattie's header off the line.
58 mins: Hoult denies Pahars.
79 mins: Gregan puts Albion ahead.
85 mins: Saints Paul Williams is sent off.

Dichio's height provided Southampton with a different set of problems, but Claus Lundekvam and Williams soon adjusted.

Former Sunderland striker Dichio met Balis' cross, only to plant his header straight at Paul Jones from eight yards.

But with Southampton looking good for a point, Jones' error proved costly as he fumbled Gregan's long-range shot, which trickled over the line.

Saints' misery was compounded when Williams was sent off after collecting a second yellow card for holding Roberts back.
