Sunderland stun Leeds
Terry Venables watches in dismay as Leeds lose
Leeds 0-1 Sunderland

Sunderland produced a battling performance to record their first win of the season and end Leeds' 100% record.

Peter Reid's Sunderland side arrived at Elland Road without a goal and only a single point - and with their manager under mounting pressure.

But a Jason McAteer goal just after the restart lifted the gloom that has been surrounding Reid in recent weeks and ensured that Sunderland recorded their first win at Elland for 41 years.

Leeds had scored six goals in their opening two league games but Terry Venables' side were unable to recapture that attacking rhythm and penetrate Sunderland's determined rearguard action.

  Key moments
46 mins: Jason McAteer rams home the winner
68 mins: Mark Viduka appeal for penalty turned down

It took just 28 seconds of the second half for the deadlock to be broken, not only in the game, but also for Sunderland this season.

Thomas Butler nipped in to take the ball off Harry Kewell before flicking in a cross for Kevin Phillips to knock down into the path of McAteer, who fired a first-time left-foot shot past Paul Robinson.

Without a win this season Sunderland flooded the midfield and deployed Phillips as a lone striker.

With Sunderland sitting back Leeds created the first chance as Eirik Bakke and Kewell combined to set up Mark Viduka.

The Australia international turned sharply to fire in a 20-yard left-foot shot which took a slight deflection for a corner.

Then Sunderland almost snatched the lead when Claudio Reyna snatched possession from Bakke, before unleashing a shot which was superbly beaten away by the legs of Robinson.

At last something to shout about for Peter Reid

Three minutes before the break Kewell heded into the side-netting from Alan Smith's cross.

Soon after the goal, Venables introduced Robbie Keane and Olivier Dacourt for Nick Barmby and Bakke.

Viduka was then thwarted twice in a minute, with debutant Matthew Piper first clearing a header off the line from a Harte corner, before then seeing Sorensen scoop up a second goal-bound effort from another dead-ball delivery.

Ian Harte was then a whisker away from equalising in the 61st minute, curling a 25-yard left-foot free-kick narrowly wide of Sorensen's left-hand post.

Leeds also had a strong penalty appeal ignored by Mark Halsey in the 68th minute, with Michael Gray clearly clattering into the back of Viduka as he attempted to rise to meet a Keane cross.
