Flo stalls on Sunderland
Flo has not decided on switch to Sunderland
Sunderland boss Peter Reid says he is desperate to sign a striker before the 31 August transfer deadline - but Rangers' Tore Andre Flo admits he is undecided over a move to The Stadium of Light.

Reid has been looking for a striker to partner Kevin Phillips throughout the summer and has been linked with Flo, Raul Tamudo and Robbie Keane.

It is hard to get that quality striker you need, but perhaps I will be successful

Sunderland's opening-day draw against Blackburn emphasised the need for a new marksman at the Stadium of Light.

But Flo is hesitating over making a move, despite Rangers boss Alex McLeish revealing a deal was still on the cards.

Flo told BBC Scotland: "I don't know what's happening myself. I am just concentrating on playing football at the moment.

"The clubs are talking, I haven't made up my mind. I like it a lot at Rangers."

The Black Cats dominated large chunks of the first-half against Blackburn, but with Phillips plowing a lone furrow up front, they lacked a cutting edge.

After the game Reid insisted he would try and sign a new forward in the next week.

"Obviously my job is to try and improve the squad," he said.

"That is what I hope to do in the next week or so.

"It is hard to get that quality striker you need, but perhaps I will be successful."

Reid has been the subject of terrace abuse throughout pre-season following his failure to strengthen his squad over the summer.

But he remains defiant in the face of criticism and is determined to rectify the club's goalscoring problems.

"There is a minority who are not happy," he said.

"I can understand that as you are not going to please all the people all of the time.

"I am doing my best, that is all I can do, and so are the players.

"If we stick together, we are a force, no doubt about that."

Recent signing Stephen Wright made his debut for the Black Cats and was booked in the first minute for a rash tackle on Damien Duff.

But overall Reid was impressed with the quality of the defender's performance.

"I thought he was a little bit unfortunate to get booked. Tommy Butler was clattered four times in two minutes, but not one yellow card was awarded.

"But that is nit-picking. Wright showed what he is - a defender who can get it down and pass it. He stuck at it really well."

But for Rovers - with Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole playing together up front - it was a frustrating afternoon.

"Sunderland showed us great respect with the system they employed," said manager Graeme Souness.

"When stepped up a gear, we looked threatening and I have to be pleased with the way we played in the second half."
