Arsenal begin the season in fine style, winning 4-0 at Middlesbrough, but then crash 2-1 at home to Leeds who have Lee Bowyer and Danny Mills sent off. The Gunners then start an eight-game unbeaten run with a 4-0 win over Leicester but Patrick Vieira is sent off.
United lose the Charity Shield to Liverpool and win only one league game - at home to Fulham - in the opening month. Jaap Stam departs Old Trafford.
