Arsenal striker Dennis Bergkamp picked up the Barclaycard Player of the Month award for his performances in March.

Liverpool won an impressive five out of five in March, beating Fulham, Newcastle, Middlesborough, Chelsea and Charlton.

The decision was made by the Barclaycard Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

The Barclaycard Awards Panel said: "Gerard Houllier's illness has been one of the most dramatic stories of this Barclaycard Premiership season and football fans across the country will be delighted to see him back to good health.

"Houllier's reappearance at Anfield has clearly spurred the team on as they chase domestic and European silverware.

Bergkamp is one of the most skilful players to ever grace the Premiership

"But we shouldn't overlook the work that Phil Thompson has done when unexpectedly called upon.

"He took over the role of manager at one of the world's biggest clubs in difficult circumstances and ensured Liverpool stuck to winning ways. "

Bergkamp's current form has propelled the Gunners to the top of the Barclaycard Premiership thanks to four straight wins in March that included two goals from the Dutchman.

Barclaycard's Awards Panel said: "Bergkamp is two-footed, he can score goals from anywhere and has the ability to change a match with a moment of genius.

"It is no surprise that his current purple patch has coincided with Arsenal looking like title favourites again because when he plays well, Arsenal play well.

"As one of the most skilful players to ever grace the Barclaycard Premiership, he is a worthy recipient of this award."
