A Jason Euell double handed Charlton their fourth successive victory against Chelsea.

Frank Lampard looked as though he had grabbed a point for Chelsea with a goal eight minutes from time after Euell had given Charlton the lead.

But the Charlton striker raced clear in the 89th minute to secure a deserved victory for the Addicks.

The hosts out-battled a disappointing Chelsea side throughout the game and Euell's late goal leaves Chelsea's Champions league aspirations looking all but over.

72 mins: Euell volleys Charlton into a deserved lead
79 mins: Kiely catches Haselbaink but this time Chelsea's penalty appeals are denied
83 mins: Lampard brings Chelsea level
89 mins: Euell races clear to win the match for Charlton

The Blues brought back William Gallas after six matches out with an ankle injury and the French defender was soon in the thick of the action.

When Jason Euell latched onto a Mathias Svensson header Gallas was the nearest Chelsea defender.

We need to try and win and get three points every week to have a little chance of a ride in the Champions League
Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri
Euell poked the ball past him and was caught on the knee by the Frenchman, but referee Graham Poll waved away Charlton's appeals for a penalty.

The hosts produced the first real effort after 21 minutes when Paul Konchesky set up Chris Bart-Williams, but the midfielder's shot drifted wide of the far post.

Five minutes later Svensson won a far-post header and Charlton captain Graham Stuart flicked the ball on, but Emmanuel Petit cleared as Euell prepared to pounce.

Svensson also forced Chelsea goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini into action with a 25-yard shot, but Chelsea slowly worked their way into the game and nearly took the lead three minutes before the break.

Frank Lampard curled a pass into the path of Eidur Gudjohnsen but Charlton centre-back Jorge Costa produced a sensational sliding tackle to deny the Iceland international.

Charlton made an encouraging opening to the second period with Svensson almost connecting with Stuart's deep right-wing cross.

Soon after Konchesky sent over a fine cross but no Charlton player could get on the end of it.

We were solid and kept Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen quiet - I don't think their strikers underestimated us as they knew they would be in for a game
Charlton manager Alan Curbishley
A minute later Konchesky decided to go it alone and he forced Cudicini into a fine save after playing a one-two with Euell.

Chelsea were continuing to rely on their lively front two to create something out of nothing and they paid the price when Euell chested down Svensson's header and volleyed the ball past Cudicini.

Gallas then cleared off the line from Euell and Svensson in a matter of seconds.

Late winner

Chelsea brought on Gianfranco Zola and Jesper Gronkjaer and the Italian immediately lifted the Blues.

They might have had a penalty when Charlton keeper Dean Kiely brought down Hasselbaink, before they levelled matters with eight minutes to go.

Hasselbaink squared the ball across the face of goal and Lampard slammed it home.

It looked as though Chelsea were going to take a point, but Euell had other ideas and raced clear at the death to win the game for Charlton.
