Southampton's recent good form was brought to a halt by a stubborn Bolton Wanderers side, as a goalless draw left both sides still struggling in the lower reaches of the Premiership.

Saints had Rory Delap sent off for dissent late on in a game they had slightly the better of - despite also losing striker Marian Pahars to injury in the first half.

A draw was not what we wanted, but a draw was probably a fair result
Saints boss Gordon Strachan

The absence of Kevin Davies, James Beattie and Agustin Delgado meant that the home side began with Jo Tessem pressed into action up front.

Pahars' injury saw Brett Ormerod come into the fray, after he had only just been passed fit after injury.

Bolton, meanwhile, gave a debut to new signing Youri Dorkaeff.

And the French World Cup-winner almost broke the deadlock on the quarter-hour mark, Paul Jones producing a superb tip-over from his header.

Jones was called into action again 15 minutes later, pushing Stig Tofting's thunderous 30-yeard shot round the post.

But Djorkaeff faded significantly early in the second half and when he was substituted by Wanderers' manager Sam Allardyce, Bolton seemed to lose their way.

That was the cue for Saints to dominate the game, Fabrice Fernandez missing a simple chance from eight yards out.

It was important for us to keep a second clean sheet on the trot - and if we keep playing like that, we'll keep picking up points
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce

But it was the lively Ormerod who came closest to winning the game, crashing a right-foot volley just wide of the post and minutes later heading a foot over the crossbar.

Despite Delap's sending-off for a second bookable offence, Bolton were unable to make their advantage count, with substitute Rod Wallace fluffing a chance to clinch all three points.

Nonetheless, the valuable away point took Bolton further clear of Blackburn who are in 18th position.
