Sol Campbell opens his account for Arsenal
Newcastle remain on top of the table after Wednesday's programme thanks to a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough.
Alan Shearer gave Newcastle the lead on the half hour after a scramble in the box, and Gary Speed headed the second after the break. Olivier Bernard then completed a convincing win for the Magpies. Match report Goals from Sol Campbell and Sylvain Wiltord gave Arsenal a crucial win over rivals Chelsea in a taut London derby.
Liverpool kept up the chase in an entertaining 2-1 win at Aston Villa. The Reds took the lead in amazing circumstances, when Peter Schmeichel threw the ball straight at referee Andy D'Urso and it fell to Jari Litmanen, who easily slotted home. Villa hit back through Lee Hendrie, but Vladimir Smicer got the winner 15 minutes from time to make up for a Litmanen penalty miss. Match report A Robbie Fowler hat-trick got Leeds back on track with a convincing win at Bolton. The former Liverpool striker put Leeds two up inside 20 minutes, and completed his triple late on despite missing a second-half penalty.
Manchester United left it late, but completed a fine day for the leading sides by winning 2-0 at Everton. David Beckham came off the bench to provide the cross for Ryan Giggs to head home, before the Welshman laid on a second for Ruud van Nistelrooy. Match report
Niall Quinn scored twice as Sunderland ended a woeful run away from home with a 3-0 win at Blackburn. Kevin Kilbane scored the third, and a poor day for Blackburn was compounded by Craig Short getting sent off in the second half. Match report Ipswich fashioned a crucial 2-0 win over Leicester to move off the bottom of the table. They moved above Leicester thanks to second-half goals from Marcus Bent and Sixto Peralta. Match report Glenn Hoddle's return to Southampton ended in disappointment as Spurs were beaten by the Saints. James Beattie scored the game's only goal. Match report Derby endured a miserable day at Upton Park as they were thrashed by West Ham and had Benito Carbone sent off for two bookable offences. Sebastian Schemmel put the Hammers ahead inside five minutes before Carbone saw red in the second half.
Paolo di Canio, Trevor Sinclair and Jermain Defoe rounded off the win.
Fulham and Charlton played out a goalless draw at Craven Cottage. Jason Euell came closest to breaking the deadlock, but saw his shot shave the outside of the post when clear on goal. Match report
