West Ham 0-2 Fulham

Fulham inflicted West Ham's first home defeat of the season in an ill-tempered derby at Upton Park.

Although there was little to choose between the sides, Fulham showed greater incision and deserved their first away win of the season.

They went ahead shortly before half time with a header from Sylvain Legwinski and doubled their lead on 65 minutes through Steed Malbranque.

  Key incidents
39 mins: Hayles misses for Fulham with the goal at his mercy.
44 mins: Legwinski heads Fulham into the lead.
65 mins: Malbranque extends Fulham's lead.
The Cottagers could have added further goals after that as they ripped West Ham open on the counter-attack.

West Ham, who had won their last three matches, never got into their stride.

They failed to get a grip on midfield and Frederic Kanoute and Paolo di Canio struggled to get into the game.

There were several confrontations during the game and both Hayden Foxe and Barry Hayles could have been sent off midway throught the first half.

Foxe appeared to block Hayles with an arm in the face and the Fulham striker responded with a shove in the face.

Referee Graham Barber chose only to book the duo.

Hayles should have put Fulham ahead when he rounded Hislop shortly before half time.

But he scuffed his shot with the goal at his mercy and Christian Dailly was able to block the weak effort, even though he seemed to do so with his arm.

The ball came back to Steed Malbranque, whose follow-up was brilliantly cleared by Foxe.

Fulham did score a minute before half time. Malbranque sent in a corner from the left and Legwinski rose unmarked inside the six-yard box to head home.

The Hammers were doubly aggrieved by Fulham's second. Paolo di Canio appealed for a free kick when he was felled by Malbranque deep inside the Fulham half.

Referee Barber waved play on and Saha broke before feeding Malbranque, who shot powerfully past Hislop from 10 yards.

The Hammers piled forward in search of a goal, but it was the counter-attacking visitors who looked the more likely to score.

Malbranque forced a fine save out of Hislop and Hayles ballooned the rebound over the crossbar.

Then Boa Morte had a good appeal for a penalty turned down after being barged to the ground in the area by Foxe.

Hutchison went close with an angled shot in the dying minutes but the commanding Edwin van der Saar reacted brilliantly to block with his leg.
