Hasselbaink saves Chelsea
Fabrizio Ravanelli claims his seventh goal of the season
E-mail your reaction to Football Talk Derby County 1-1 Chelsea Derby continue to languish in the bottom three after drawing 1-1 with Chelsea. Claudio Ranieri's side have been beaten only once this season but have drawn six times in 10 games.
Fabrizio Ravanelli gave Derby the perfect start with his seventh goal of the season after only six minutes. But Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink with his 10th goal of the season equalised for Chelsea just after the restart. Ravanelli's goal came during a bright opening from Derby. He side-footed home after the ball rebounded to him in a goalmouth melee after Mark Bosnich had parried Darryl Powell's shot. However, television replays showed that Ravanelli was clearly offside.
With Derby dominating Chelsea were grateful to Mark Bosnich who kept them in the game. Soon after Ravanelli's goal Bosnich foiled first Carbone and then Deon Burton. On 22 minutes the former Manchester United goalkeeper pulled off a superb double save from Carbone.
Just after the restart Bosnich denied Ravanelli a second goal after the Italian had linked well with Burton. Bosnich's best save came midway through the second half when he bravely blocked Ravanelli's fierce shot. Chelsea came back into the game as an attacking force after Claudio Ranieri switched from a 3-5-2 to a 4-4-2 formation. At the interval Ranieri further rejigged his team introducing Frank Lampard, Mario Stanic and Mikael Forssell in a triple substitution.
After that initial tactical switch, Chelsea created a great opportunity for Hasselbaink but uncharacteristically the Dutchman completely missed his kick in front of goal. But three minutes after the restart Hasselbaink made no such mistake as he claimed his 10th goal of the season.
The ball broke to the Dutch international striker on the edge of the box and he powered a low shot past Poom. On 68 minutes, Hasselbaink hit the post when he his low shot was deflected on to the woodwork by Poom. As the second period progressed it was the Estonian goalkeeper who took centre stage. Having been out of the Derby side with cracked ribs for nine ribs he twice made athletic saves from Lampard. Late on Lampard and Ravanelli also missed good chances.
Derby: Poom, Mawene, Higginbotham, Riggott, Zavagno, Ducrocq, Burley, Powell, Carbone, Burton, Ravanelli. Subs: Feuer, Christie, Boertien, Murray, Valakari. Chelsea: Bosnich, Gallas, Desailly, Terry, Le Saux, Melchiot, Petit, Jokanovic, Zenden, Hasselbaink, Zola. Subs: Evans, Lampard, Stanic, Dalla Bona, Forssell. Referee: S Bennett (Kent).
