Leeds brush off Charlton
Robbie Keane scores for Leeds against Charlton
Leeds celebrate Robbie Keane's first goal of the season
Charlton 0-2 Leeds United

Leeds went to the top of the Premiership on Sunday with a comfortable victory over Charlton.

A goal in either half from Robbie Keane and Charlton old boy Danny Mills secured three points for the Yorkshire side.

But their task was made easier thanks to a moment of madness from Charlton captain Graham Stuart.

Ten minutes before half-time, Stuart was ordered off after a two-footed challenge on Ian Harte.

  Key moments
21 mins: Keane puts Leeds ahead
28 mins: Keane is booked for diving after going down under Kiely's challenge
31 mins: Young booked for foul on Dacourt
37 mins: Stuart sent off for two-footed challenge on Harte
51 mins: Shaun Bartlett given yellow card for illegal tackle on Ferdinand
62 mins: Mills makes it 2-0 with long-range effort

The Addicks kept trying to push forward but the extra man meant Leeds were always in control and could have had a hatful of goals.

A bright start to the game saw a flurry of corners as both teams pursued attacking tactics.

Charlton began more promisingly and nearly went ahead after 16 minutes, but a brilliant one-handed reaction save from Nigel Martyn denied Mark Fish's powerful header.

Leeds began to string together a few chances and went ahead when Ian Harte's left-footed pass split the Charlton defence.

Fish made the mistake of allowing the ball to run past him and the quicksilver Keane placed the ball past Kiely with his first touch.

Keane's pace and awareness was causing the Addicks real problems and he nearly punished Charlton again less than 10 minutes later.

We feel a bit hard done by - when we played here last year against Leeds there were far worse challenges

Finding himself through on goal, the Irish striker went to ground as Kiely threw himself at his feet.

But instead of pointing to the spot, the referee booked Keane for diving.

Minutes later the ex-Inter Milan forward, once again penetrated Charlton's back four and this time evaded Kiely's challenge but hit the post from a tight angle.

Boos for Mills

As the second half began, there were good chances for Keane and for Jason Euell but neither could find the target.

Leeds began to dominate more and it was no surprise when the second goal arrived.

Mills, who had been booed all afternoon by the home fans, got his own back with a superb left-footed shot from 25 yards which found the corner of Kiely's net.

Charlton heads began to droop and the match became an exercise in damage limitation.

After 70 minutes, Harry Kewell made a spectacular run through the Charlton defence but could not find the goal.

Then Lee Bowyer had a chance to score against his old club after a clever back-heel from Keane but his 20-yard shot just flew wide.
