Sturridge grabs point
Ipswich's Makin goes flying over Leicester's Savage
Ipswich's Makin goes flying over Leicester's Savage
Leicester 1-1 Ipswich

Dean Sturridge scored a last-minute equaliser to hand Peter Taylor's struggling Leicester side their first point of the season.

Marcus Stewart's first-half strike looked like condemning the Foxes to their third consecutive defeat, but Sturridge popped up with Leicester's first goal of the campaign.

The game was never likely to be a classic and turned out to be scrappy and highly competitive, with both sides ending with 10 men.

I have not lost the dressing room because the players are with me and they showed that - if I had lost the dressing room, I would know it and I don't think I have

Leicester also missed a penalty, with Muzzy Izzet shooting high and wide after Ipswich keeper Matteo Sereni had been controversially dismissed.

Leicester were first to try their luck, with Callum Davidson sending a 30-yard drive wide after six minutes, but Ipswich soon settled and Martin Reuser tested the Foxes' debutant keeper Ian Walker with a firm, low shot.

After 13 minutes Matt Elliott failed to clear, Matt Holland played the ball back into the area and Stewart volleyed home left-footed from 18 yards.

Passions ran high as the half drew to a close, with both sides having two players booked in a frantic four-minute spell, and both sides went close with the whistle looming.

Izzet failed to connect cleanly after Davidson's long throw fell to him and Sereni saved low to his right, before Holland headed Chris Makin's cross just wide for the visitors.

Leicester went close after 48 minutes when Davidson forced a stunning save from Sereni from 18 yards.

But in the 58th minute the game erupted when Sereni was sent off in controversial circumstances.

There's no doubt that Robbie Savage looked as if he had been hit by a sledgehammer and the keeper was sent off because of it

The Italian keeper reacted after being challenged by Savage and then jostled the Welsh international midfielder, who crashed to the ground.

Sereni was dismissed for a professional foul and Leicester were awarded a penalty.

Ipswich were furious and surrounded referee Barry Knight, but when Izzet stepped up he sent the kick high over the bar.

Reuser clipped a post with a free-kick as Ipswich fought back, and with 20 minutes to go Dean Sturridge headed over from six yards.

Leicester joined the visitors on 10 men when Lee Marshall was given his marching orders, but they grabbed a vital point when Sturridge pounced at the death.
