Black Cats comeback stuns Chelsea

Sunderland scorer McCann (l) tussles with Wise
Chelsea 2-4 Sunderland

Sunderland blew Chelsea away with a devastating second-half performance at Stamford Bridge.

The home side had gone in 2-1 up at half-time, but they had no answer to three Sunderland goals after the interval.

Don Hutchison was the inspiration for the visitors, scoring a goal in each half and also setting one up for Gavin McCann.

Chelsea were lively in attack, but shakey at the back, and their goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini had an afternoon he would rather forget.

Sunderland were the better team at the start of the first-half, forcing four corners in the first 10 minutes.

From one, Hutchison hit a shot narrowly wide of the post.

Desailly opener

Yet it was Chelsea who should have taken the lead.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink gathered a long pass from Albert Ferrer and broke the Sunderland offside trap.

The Dutch striker found himself one-on-one with Sorenson inside the area, but inexplicably chose to pass to Jesper Gronkjaer, whose goal was disallowed for offside.

I'm delighted for the players and Don Hutchison was outstanding
  Peter Reid
Sunderland manager
But Chelsea made no mistake after a quarter-of-an-hour.

Dennis Wise played a short corner to Hasselbaink, who passed to Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The Icelandic striker was near the byline and cleverly volleyed toward goal, where Desailly was on hand to head home from close range.

Sunderland had cause to be aggrieved in view of their early domination, but they restored parity after 28 minutes.

Chelsea stunned

From a free kick, Hutchison fended off Lebeouf and scored with a brilliant first-time volley.

The game was becoming increasingly fiery as both sides fought for dominance and there were a number of flying tackles and resulting spats.

Sunderland deserved it but it was thanks to our mistakes - whoever makes mistakes has to pay for them
  Claudio Ranieri
Chelsea manager
Chelsea resumed their lead after 36 minutes when they again broke Sunderland's offside trap.

This time it was Gudjohnsen who gathered a long pass and found himself clear. He took his time before thumping an emphatic shot in off the crossbar.

Sunderland looked massively determined after the interval and began to dominate their hosts.

They quickly levelled when Hutchison headed a Phillips cross in at the far post from point-blank range.

They then stunned Chelsea on the hour when McCann receieved a pass from the inspirational Hutchison and coolly shot past Cudicini.

And Sunderland put the game beyond doubt when Cudicini made a hash of a backpass, allowing McCann to fire at goal and Phillips to bundle in.
