Magpies grab draw against Man Utd

Newcastle 1-1 Manchester United

Substitute Stephen Glass scored a late equaliser to earn Newcastle a deserved draw at icy St James' Park.

The visitors went ahead in the first half through a controversial penalty, which was emphatically converted by David Beckham.

They seemed to have the game under control after that and to be heading for their 15th league win of the season.

But Magpies boss Bobby Robson changed the course of events with a crucial triple-substitution in the 75th minute.

I think we'll improve in the second-half (of the season). I think there are some things that are encouraging, like the return of (Andy) Cole, (Teddy) Sheringham and (Dwight) Yorke, for instance
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson

He brought on Daniel Cordone, Lomana Lua Lua and Glass and all three players combined for Newcastle's equaliser.

The home side had created the better opportunities during an entertaining first-half, with Kieron Dyer outstanding for them in attack.

But it was Manchester United who had the first real chance. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played the ball through to Dwight Yorke, who was back in the visitor's side following suspension.

He got inside Warren Barton in the area and was one-on-one with Harper, but Newcastle's keeper got down well to block with his legs.

Newcastle should have taken the lead minutes later.

Dyer's left-foot shot beat Barthez and only needed a touch from one of his colleagues into the unguarded net, but teenager Shola Ameobi slid in and put the ball high over the crossbar from a yard out.

  Key incidents

25: Beckham scores from the penalty spot for Man Utd after Giggs is brought down
60: Harper brilliantly saves Solkjaer's close-range shot
75: Bobby Robson brings on Cordone, Lua Lua and Glass for Newcastle
81: All three combine as Glass scores the equaliser

The visitors then went ahead with a questionable penalty. Giggs went past Griffin on the left side of the area before turning inside him.

The United winger went down as the pair tussled and referee Mike Riley showed no hesitation in awarding a penalty.

With regular taker Denis Irwin out injured, David Beckham stepped up and effortlessly hammered the spot-kick past Harper.

Newcastle continued to create chances. Bassedas chipped the ball over Manchester United's defence to Solano, who played an excellent ball across the face of goal, but Barthez got a vital touch that took the ball away from onrushing attackers.

Gary Neville brilliantly blocked Dyer's follow-up shot. Dyer had another good shot minutes later, but Barthez again saved well.

We had guys who threw themselves in and got us out of trouble when it was on an edge
  Newcastle manager Bobby Robson

Newcastle committed men forward after the interval in their quest for an equaliser and left space for United to exploit as a result.

Harper kept his side in the game after an hour when he brilliantly thwarted Solskjaer from close range with his left leg.

Newcastle boss Bobby Robson sent on three substitutes at the same time in a desperate effort to salvage a point and all were involved in Newcastle's equaliser.

Cordone broke down the right, evading Manchester United's offside trap. Lua Lua miscued inside the area, but the ball fell fortuitously to Glass, who side-footed into the net with his right foot.

Newcastle: Harper, Barton, Griffin, Goma, Hughes, Solano, Bassedas, Acuna, Speed, Dyer, Ameobi.

Man Utd: Barthez, Phil Neville, Silvestre, Gary Neville, Brown, Beckham, Butt, Keane, Giggs, Yorke, Solskjaer.
