Ryan Hall's brace rescued a point for Southend against Gillingham.

The Gills took the lead when Cody McDonald slotted home Curtis Weston's pass for his 18th goal of the season.

Hall then levelled the score with a superb curling free-kick from 30 yards, but Adebayo Akinfenwa scored a penalty after Blair Sturrock felled McDonald.

Sturrock then slid in Hall to equalise with a strike from the edge of the area, while Chris Barker's goal-line clearance denied the Gills a win.

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:
"It was end-to-end stuff. In the first half I didn't think we played to the standard we have been achieving here at home.

"But the second half was much better and we were much more up to the pace of the game.

"I think we had several chances in the first half, they had several chances in the second half, so I think a draw was the fair result."

Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler told BBC Radio Kent:
"It was simply two teams who wanted to win a football match, but I thought we were too loose having been 2-1 up at half time.

"We had to make a change with the big man [Adebayo Akinfenwa] feeling ill at half time. We missed him because he holds up the ball well and brings people into play.

"The team didn't do the things we asked for at half-time. We lost the ball in the middle of the park for the second goal. We could have done a lot better in the second half."
