Northampton scored six at Sixfields for the first time as Crewe were beaten.

Ajay Leitch-Smith's shot squirmed in to put the Alex ahead but Shaun Harrad poked in from close range and a Michael Jacobs free-kick turned it around.

Crewe's Ashley Westwood had a penalty saved before Dean Beckwith headed home, Andy Holt fired in and Abdul Osman struck from long range.

Billy McKay capitalised on David Artell's error for 6-1, while Antoni Sarcevic pulled one back from 18 yards.

Northampton manager Ian Sampson told BBC Radio Northampton:
"It was a good result. We thought there'd be goals in the game because Crewe play some really good football and they're difficult to deal with.

"To score six goals at any time in any football match is an achievement so we're very happy with that.

"We were also delighted to have six goal-scorers which is fantastic and the lads who came into the side did really well."

Crewe manager Dario Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke:
"In a funny way I was actually very pleased with them as everything that could have gone wrong went wrong.

"We should have scored a penalty to go 2-2, and why Westy changed his mind from what we had practiced I'm not sure.

"It seemed to be a night when people kept making mistakes - not all the time, but in isolation, and every time we made a mistake we got punished for it."
