Burton Albion 3-1 Southend

Burton Albion produced a professional display to inflict Southend United's first League Two defeat in five games.

On-loan Aston Villa striker James Collins missed an early penalty for the Brewers, firing wide from the spot after being tripped by Graham Coughlan.

Jacques Maghoma gave them the lead from six yards, turning home Russell Penn's cross, before Luke Prosser's own goal.

Blair Sturrock headed in Ryan Hall's free-kick to pull one back but Aaron Webster's 20-yard shot sealed it.

After Collins' missed spot-kick, Maghoma showed him the way before Scott Malone's free kick glanced in off Prosser's head to make it 2-0.

A double half-time substitution by the visitors quickly paid dividends when Sturrock scored, but Webster's strike secured the points it and only a fine save by goalkeeper Glenn Morris to deny Shaun Harrad spared Southend a heavier defeat.

Burton manager Paul Peschisolido told BBC Radio Derby:
"I think it was a satisfactory result. I can't say I was pleased with the first-half performance, in fact I think it was one of our worst.

"We found ourselves 2-0 up, but I thought our passing was poor. Don't get me wrong, the workrate and the endeavour were there, we closed them down, but we just kept giving them the ball.

"Fortunately, we kept going, because we could've sulked and gone into our shell after missing that penalty, but we didn't and we got some great goals and we showed some great quality."

Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex:
"I am sorry for the fans travelling today, you could see that from the start, there was a sharpness about them.

"I don't think there has been enough football or training to enable this team (Southend) to perform at this level.

"There was a sharpness and match fitness which slowly left our team as the game went on."
