Rochdale 0-0 Bournemouth

Rochdale 0-0 Bournemouth

League Two leaders Rochdale were held by third-placed Bournemouth in a top-of-the-table clash at Spotland.

Dale drew a blank as strike pair Chris O'Grady and Chris Dagnall were both foiled by visiting keeper Shwan Jalal.

The Cherries wasted a great chance when Brett Pitman crossed and Alan Connell failed to connect from six yards out.

In a tense finish, O'Grady had a fierce shot blocked by defender Jason Pearce while at the other end, Pitman had a late effort ruled out for offside.

Earlier, Jalal had comfortably saved Tom Kennedy's curling free kick, while home keeper Frank Fielding was nearly embarrassed when a bobble on the pitch saw him completely miss a back-pass.

The Dale stopper was also relieved to see Cherries substitute Sammy Igoe's 30-yard drive sail just over the bar.

The result means Dale's lead over second-placed Notts County is cut to five points after the Magpies won 1-0 at Shrewsbury - but Keith Hill's side only need five more points to make sure of promotion.

Meanwhile, defeats for Rotherham and Chesterfield mean Bournemouth are now six points clear of the play-off places with six games remaining as they continue their own promotion push.

The Cherries were able to name a full complement of seven substitutes for only the fifth time all season - but lost defenders Lee Bradbury and Ryan Garry to injury during the game.

Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester:

"They did exceptionally well. It's another point towards the total and we are in a good position to be promoted.

"You've got to give respect to the opposition and any negativity [from the fans] does creep on to the pitch.

"We're 14 points clear of fourth place so, by my calculations, we only need three or four points."

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent:

"The lads' attitude and commitment were absolutely outstanding, I can't praise them enough.

"Our organisation was good, we restricted a really good side to half chances, but we had the best chances in the game."
