Hereford 1-0 Chesterfield

Ryan Valentine scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot as Hereford edged a tight game against Chesterfield.

Bulls keeper Adam Bartlett saved Donal McDermott's first-minute volley, while opposite number Tommy Lee superbly denied James Walker and Craig King.

Chesterfield's David Perkins hit the crossbar from distance at the start of the second half.

But Hereford won it after Robert Page fouled Mark Marshall in the area and Valentine scored from the spot.

That was enough to lift the Bulls five points clear of trouble.

But, on an afternoon when victory would have lifted them into the League Two play-off zone, Chesterfield dropped a place to 10th.

Bulls boss manager John Trewick told BBC Hereford and Worcester:

"There was plenty of excitement at both ends of the pitch - too much so towards the end of the game for me.

"But it was a great game for the fans to watch and the right result for us.

"We put a lot of graft in today and got a great result at the end of it."

Chesterfield manager John Sheridan told BBC Radio Sheffield:

'It wasn't entertaining to us as we lost the game, I think we should have got something as we were the dominant team.

"Obviously the penalty set us back because they really weren't in the game until they got that."
