Cheltenham   2 - 1   Grimsby

Substitute Barry Hayles inspired Cheltenham to victory as they came from behind to beat Grimsby 2-1 in a thrilling opening-day encounter.

Hayles, who joined Cheltenham in the summer, set up Lee Ridley's curling equaliser, then slid home the winner after good work by David Hutton.

Grimsby, impressive in the first half, had taken the lead when Barry Conlon scrambled the ball in after 35 minutes.

Conlon nearly rescued a point in the final minute but dragged his shot wide.

Cheltenham Town manager Martin Allen told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:

"It wasn't a good first thirty minutes. We looked leggy, slow and weren't competitive.

"In the second half, I thought we were absolutely superb. A lot of credit has got to go to the players for that.

"We showed a lot more quality, we moved the ball about quicker and looked a lot more confident in possession. To get the win for the players and supporters is a big boost."
