Bournemouth 1-0 Chester

Darren Anderton celebrates his winning goal (Picture: Mick Cunningham)
Anderton was making the 569th club appearance of his career

Darren Anderton marked his final game in English football in memorable style with a late winner to give Bournemouth a positive points total in the table.

Anderton, who had come on as a 56th minute substitute, hammered the ball home from the edge of the area after Mark Molesley's cross was cleared.

Anderton almost scored moments earlier when his 35-yard free-kick flew wide.

Before the goal Chester substitute Tony Dinning was given a straight red card for elbowing Danny Hollands.

It was a storybook ending to a career in which Anderton won 30 caps for England and he was given a standing ovation as he left the field.

Bournemouth started the season with a deduction of 17 points and Anderton's goal could prove crucial to their hopes of survival.

It secured the side's first League win in seven games but stretched their unbeaten run to six matches and took them to a total of three points.

Anderton joined the Cherries in 2006 and was named supporters' player of the year in his first season at the club.
