Morecambe earned a point thanks to teenage striker Aaron Taylor who marked his debut with a fine headed goal.
Rochdale started the better of the two sides and Chris Dagnall gave them the
lead with a close-range tap-in.
The visitors were then denied a quick second when Morecambe keeper Barry Roche made a superb triple save to deny Gary Jones, Lee Thorpe and Adam Rundle.
Morecambe equalised when 18-year-old Taylor headed home a fine Rene Howe cross two minutes into the second half.
