A brilliant Kevin Ellison hat-trick brought Chester their first away win of the season.
Ellison grabbed the opener when he latched onto Ryan Lowe's flick on, ran 40 yards and clipped home, but Danny North levelled from close range.
Ellison then fired a 25-yard free-kick into the corner to restore Chester's lead and curled home a brilliant left-foot shot to seal the win.
Danny Boshell won a late penalty after Steve vaughan's foul, but blazed wide.
Chester City manager Simon Davies told BBC Radio Merseyside:

"We will take the three points because it's massive for us as it increases the gap on teams like Grimsby."
