Torquay 2-3 Carlisle

A stunning first-half performance by Carlisle earned a precious victory which could save them from the drop and snuff out Torquay's play-off hopes.

Faster to the ball and tigerish in the tackle, Carlisle took the lead through Craig Russell in the 30th minute when he turned home Richie Foran's cross.

Brian Wake doubled the lead seven minutes later with a superb left-foot volley and another Foran cross in first-half injury-time set up Mark Summerbell for the third.

Booed off the pitch at half-time, Torquay roused themselves in the second half and gave themselves a chance when Carlisle skipper Peter Murphy headed into his own net in the 69th minute.

When Jo Kuffour volleyed their second in the 77th minute it set up a grandstand finish but Carlisle, with Murphy and goalkeeper Matt Glennon outstanding, held on.

Torquay: Van Heusden, Canoville, Hazell, Woozley, Hill, Bedeau, Russell, Fowler, Clist, Kuffour, Graham. Subs: Dearden, Gritton, Wills, Hockley, Killoughery.

Carlisle: Glennon, Birch, Murphy, Andrews, Maddison, McCarthy, Summerbell, Baldacchino, Foran, Russell, Wake. Subs: Keen, McGill, Shelley, Farrell, Rundle.
