Rushden edge out York City
Warren Patmore was the hero for Rushden & Diamonds as his goal gave the Third Division new boys a winning start against York.

The striker, a summer signing from Yeovil, latched on to Justin Jackson's cross in the 27th minute to volley past City goalkeeper Alan Fettis.

And Daniel Talbot could have extended the lead 10 minutes later when his left-foot drive flashed just past the upright.

As York hit back, debutant striker Michael Proctor had an effort cleared off the line by veteran Garry Butterworth four minutes before the break.

After the interval the Minstermen threw everything forward in a bid to find the equaliser and midway through the half they nearly levelled when Gary Hobson headed just wide.

But, for all their effort, the hosts could not find a way through and they were frustrated again in the final minute when Rushden keeper Billy Turley kept out a long-range drive from Lee Nogan.

York: Fettis, Potter, Edmondson, Basham, Hobson, Brass, Hocking, Richardson, Bullock, Nogan, Proctor. Subs: Howarth, Fielding, Emmerson, Duffield, Wood.

Rushden & D'monds: Turley, Peters, Underwood, Mustafa, Talbot, Brady, Butterworth, Rodwell, Mills, Patmore, Jackson. Subs: Pennock, Setchell, Solkhon, Carey, Darby.

Referee: M Warren (Walsall)
