Southend 1-0 Darlington
A goal 10 minutes from time earned Southend victory over Darlington at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers were made to work all the way for their win in a tense contest but in the dying minutes, striker Mark Rawle proved the hero as he rounded off a fine move to score.

Having gone on as a substitute after the break, the pacy forward beat two defenders on the edge of the box before finding the net with a low drive which curled just inside the post.

Southend had been up against it from the 38th minute when defender Damon Searle had been sent off following a clash with Darlington striker Barry Conlon.

But the visitors failed to take advantage of several chances with Mark Convery's powerful drive that was tipped round the post the closest they got to an equaliser.

Southend: Flahavan, Broad, Searle, Whelan, Cort, Maher, Thurgood, Holness, Johnson, Webb, Richards. Subs: Gay, Hutchings, Risbridger, Rawle, Harris.

Darlington: Collett, Harper, Betts, Craig Liddle, Brightwell, Ford, Maddison, Atkinson, Conlon, Convery, Hodgson. Subs: Van der Geest, Reed, Jeannin, Jackson, Mellenby.

Referee: K Hill (Royston)
