Brighton extended their lead at the top of League One to seven points after a hard-earned victory at Brentford.
Bees keeper Richard Lee saved a penalty from Ashley Barnes but could do nothing to prevent Karleigh Osborne from slicing a cross into his own net with 16 minutes remaining.
The result was slightly harsh on the home side, who have now lost both games since Nicky Forster was appointed manager on a permanent basis.
In contrast, Gus Poyet's Seagulls have won six of their last seven league fixtures and are looking increasingly certain to finish the season celebrating promotion to the Championship.
It was a match that would have produced far more goals for the expectant crowd of 5,694 but for a series of outstanding saves by both goalkeepers.
The first, a one-handed stop at full stretch by Bees keeper Lee, was especially memorable and prevented Glenn Murray from ensuring that Brighton's excellent start to the match was rewarded with a goal.
The Seagulls looked certain to take the lead after repeatedly cutting open their opponents defence, but the Bees held firm and gradually settled into the match.
Sam Saunders was particularly dangerous for Brentford and had a hat-trick of first-half chances..
The first was a crisp low strike at the neat post that drew a sharp save from Casper Ankergren, the second a fierce drive from 20 yards that the Brighton keeper again did well to stop and the third was a looping effort after a mazy run into the area.
Brighton's defending was occasionally poor and the Bees had a penalty appeal turned down after Adam Reed went down under a heavy challenge.
But Poyet's team always looked capable of breaking quickly and Lee again denied Murray before the interval, with the Albion forward shooting over with the rebound.
The visiting team really should have taken the lead seven minutes after the restart but they were once again foiled by excellent goalkeeping.
Brighton were awarded a penalty after Murray went down under a heavy and clumsy challenge from the unfortunate Osborne.
Barnes placed his strike low to Lee's left but his effort lacked power and the keeper made another outstanding save as Brighton missed for the sixth time in 10 penalty attempts this season.
Saunders caused momentary confusion inside the Brighton box with a low ball across the area but it was the Seagulls who continued to create the better chances.
And they scored the game's only goal after Osborne put the ball in his own net.
Brighton almost made it 2-0 after Reed was caught in possession by Matt Sparrow, who played the ball through to Bennett for the wide man to lift his shot over the advancing Lee but wide of the target.
There was a blow for Brighton late on when Marcos Painter was stretchered off after a heavy collision with Reed.
And they survived two late scares, the first when Ankergren saved a swerving free-kick from a tight angle by the impressive Saunders and then a strike from Osborne in the seventh minute of injury time that flew over the crossbar.
Brighton boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "Today was football at its best. Today the team needed to concentrate, be strong, deal with the pitch, and deal with a penalty miss. The team was there.
"I like it when people enjoy watching us but today it was one of the best games of the season for me. It was top football. I think we had the best chances. It was tough but totally deserved.
"Today the penalty miss didn't cost us. Maybe we need a penalty specialist for next year."
