Peterborough   4 - 4   Southampton

Peterborough 4-4 Southampton

Peterborough 4-4 Southampton

Peterborough United twice came from two down to draw against Southampton in a sensational eight-goal thriller.

Richard Chaplow poked the Saints ahead and Rickie Lambert converted a penalty, the first of four scored in the match.

Craig Mackail-Smith finished from close range before Chris Whelpdale equalised, heading home from Grant McCann's cross.

Lambert scored his second spot-kick and Dean Hammond slotted in after a pull-back, but penalties from McCann and Lee Tomlin saw Posh earn a draw.

Chaplow opened the scoring for Southampton when he followed up after Peterborough goalkeeper Joe Lewis parried a shot from Lee Barnard.

Lambert then doubled the lead with his first penalty after Mark Little fouled Alex Chamberlain.

But two goals in six minutes saw Posh go in level at the break.

Mackail-Smith prodded home following a flick-on from Tomlin, before Whelpdale made it 2-2 on the stroke of half-time.

But Southampton quickly restored their two-goal advantage.

Lambert's second spot-kick came after Tom Kennedy fouled Chaplow before Hammond looked to have sealed victory when he capitalised on good work from Chamberlain.

Southampton's Daniel Seaborne then gave the hosts a route back into the game with a foul on Kelvin Langmead and McCann made no mistake from the spot.

But there was to be late drama as Peterborough were awarded another penalty in injury time.

Chamberlain's handball in the area gave Tomlin the chance and he held his nerve to secure a point.

Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
"Two of the penalties were justified, but two were nonsense.

"Richard Chaplow has dived and the referee has bottled it and he should have been sent off. It was a terrible decision.

"The referee is only human and he's made some mistakes, but we all do that.

"A lot of people will see Southampton as a big club and they are a big club, but they know they've been in a game."

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins told BBC Radio Solent:
"You score four goals, you've got to make sure you win the game. We conceded four, it's very frustrating.

"Credit to Peterborough because they kept going. We put ourselves in a position to win the game but then we shot ourselves in the foot.

"Very windy and bumpy conditions led to a game being very open and end to end."
