Bristol Rovers   2 - 4   Brighton

Bristol Rovers 2-4 Brighton

Bristol Rovers 2-4 Brighton

Table-toppers Brighton came from behind to beat strugglers Bristol Rovers.

Will Hoskins put Rovers ahead early on with a powerful long-range hit but Brighton levelled through Ashley Barnes' superb left-footed strike.

Elliott Bennett's side-footed effort, an own goal from Rovers defender Cian Bolger and a header from Glenn Murray heaped more misery on the hosts.

Hoskins' netted his second from a low drive but it was too little too late for sorry Rovers.

Brighton were left stunned when they went behind after just two minutes but Hoskins' stunning strike was cancelled out when Barnes lashed home.

The Seagulls ran riot in the second half and took the lead when Barnes' cross found Bennett, who rolled the ball in from 12 yards out.

Both sides had goals disallowed in quick succession - Barnes, Hoskins and Murray's efforts were all ruled out for offside.

Brighton's third came in unusual circumstances, with Barnes once again doing all the ground work and going one-on-one with keeper Luke Daniels only to see his shot parried away, but then deflected into the net off the back of defender Bolger.

They netted their fourth when substitute Craig Noone delivered to Murray at the far post who comfortably nodded in.

Hoskins grabbed his second from inside the penalty area but it was mere consolation for Rovers, who now lie second from bottom in the table.

Brighton boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:
"Sometimes we try to convince the players that they are better than the opposition and they need to prove it on the pitch. They scored a magnificent goal and it wasn't easy to come back.

"They started to play differently. We had to take the game in our own hands and it took a while to score.

"The only enemies we have in this league are ourselves. If we keep the pace and the quantity of points per game we'll be up in there."
