Graphic of Brighton v Colchester

Brighton 2-0 Colchester

Goals from Inigo Calderon and Craig Noone ensured Brighton beat 10-man Colchester to extend their lead at the top of League One to six points.

Calderon put the Seagulls ahead on the stroke of half-time with a shot from inside the area, after being put through on goal by Glenn Murray.

Substitute Noone doubled Albion's lead, firing in from the edge of the area.

And Colchester's woes continued when defender Pat Baldwin received a red card late on for a second booking.

Chris Wood almost opened the scoring for Brighton, who were looking to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat by second-placed Bournemouth at the weekend, but his header could only hit a Colchester post.

And Elliot Bennett went close soon after with a free-kick before Murray saw a 20-yard shot well saved by U's keeper Ben Williams.

But Brighton did eventually break the deadlock right before half-time when Seagulls defender Calderon found the net with a fine finish.

Winger Noone, who replaced Radostin Kishishev after the break, then secured Albion's win with a superb solo effort that flew into Ben Williams' net.

Colchester's best effort on goal fell to Andrew Bond but his low shot was denied by Casper Ankergren before David Mooney fired narrowly off target.

Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:
"I think we were quicker today, aggressive, we understood what we did wrong the other day [Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth].

"I'm very pleased for Noony [Craig Noone] to get on the scoresheet. But we know what we can do, even if we were not fantastic today - winning, keeping a clean sheet, you can not ask for more.

"The last five minutes, even being 11 against 10, we were under pressure because we wanted to keep that clean sheet. And we dealt with it, so I'm very pleased with everyone in terms of the defending."

Colchester United manager John Ward told BBC Essex:
"I'm disappointed that we have not been tough enough with our crosses and finishing.

"We decided to come here and press them and stay high and we got so close to them not being applauded off at half time by their home fans.

"We could not finish it off and that is the difference between us being a middle-of-the-table side and challenging for the top of the league."
