Peterborough   1 - 5   Charlton

Peterborough 1-5 Charlton

Peterborough 1-5 Charlton

Charlton thrashed Peterborough to extend their unbeaten run to six games.

Johnnie Jackson's penalty opened the scoring after Grant McCann fouled Scott Wagstaff, with Therry Racon doubling the Addicks' lead from outside the box.

Jackson finished into the top corner and Lee Martin fired past Joe Lewis to give the Addicks a 4-0 half-time lead.

McCann's curling free-kick pulled one back for Posh, but Paul Benson pounced on Lewin Nyatanga's backpass and fed Martin, who completed the rout.

The win sees Charlton, who bagged their biggest away goal haul in 11 years, close the gap on League One leaders Brighton to six points.

The Posh nightmare began when McCann was caught dithering in the box by Wagstaff.

The home skipper was lucky to escape with only a yellow card for bringing down the Athletic midfielder, but the Posh relief was short lived as Jackson made no mistake from the spot.

Racon's strike from 12 yards extended the Charlton lead soon after, with two more goals in the space of three minutes just before the break effectively ending the contest.

First, Jackson finished after a Paul Benson shot deflected into his path off Kelvin Langmead, then Martin cut inside and fired home to leave Posh heading to the dressing rooms at the break with an accompaniment of a chorus of boos.

McCann's 25-yard free-kick provided some hope, but Nyatanga's mistake allowed Benson to give Martin a simple chance for the fifth.

Peterborough United manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
"I've asked the players to come and see me tomorrow. We'll watch the video, so they can see they're own performances.

"They can let me know whether they're willing to make a big effort to turn this around or whether some of them might need to look elsewhere for January.

"People have got to decide if they're up for it or not. I'm up for it, and some of the lads have got to tell me whether they're up for it."

Charlton Athletic manager Phil Parkinson told BBC London 94.9:
"To win so convincingly away from home is something you don't usually expect, but we're pleased.

"In the first half, I thought we put in an outstanding performance and in the second it was all about being professional.

"Unfortunately we conceded a goal but then we killed it off with a fifth one."
