Peterborough 0-3 Brighton

Peterborough 0-3 Brighton

Table-toppers Brighton hammered 10-man Peterborough thanks to a brace from birthday boy Ashley Barnes.

Brighton took an early lead when Barnes glanced home from an Elliott Bennett free-kick.

The hosts' task was made more difficult when George Boyd was sent off for violent conduct, before Bennett had a penalty saved by home keeper Joe Lewis.

Inigo Calderon fired in from close range to double the lead and a Barnes penalty sealed the win.

Brighton started the day six points clear at the top of the table, while Peterborough were hoping to return to an automatic promotion spot.

But the hosts never looked like ending Brighton's unbeaten record, which now extends to 10 matches.

The scoreline could have been even more convincing but Barnes, celebrating his 21st birthday, missed his chance for a hat trick when he hit the crossbar twice late on.

Peterborough United manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
"Second best weren't we? All over the field.

"We have to give credit to them, they looked sharper than us, even with 11 men on the field.

"They enticed us into tackles for penalties and enticed us into getting red cards and they looked the better football team on the day."

Brighton manager Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex:
"We came with an attitude and a desire to win the game from the beginning. Nothing changed because until the sending off we were the better team on the pitch by far.

"The only worry was that we needed to finish off the game. We came to play our way and we showed it from the beginning.

"If you look at the stats today we had 15 shots on target. Credit to Joe Lewis (Peterborough goalkeeper) because he was the man of the match. We dominated the game and the best player was from the opposition. He was outstanding."
